Signs
Ron Pope Lyrics

Jump to: Overall Meaning ↴  Line by Line Meaning ↴

(Verse)
Our eyes are not the same color
And our skin is a different shade
And I don't know why I mention this
I am not sure, what I'm trying to say

(Chorus – part 1)
And we are all searching for signs
Whether we look towards the sky
Or curse behind our eyes and rationalize

(Chorus – part 2)
Whatever we divine
Well, I hope that you and I
Realize that what we've found it could survive
So if you reach out your hand, I'll give you mine

(Verse)
And the sky, it is a deep crimson
And the street, it is alive again
And on your face, there is a new lesson
One that I can't pretend I've learned yet

(Chorus – part 1)
And we are all searching for signs
Whether we look towards the sky
Or curse behind our eyes and rationalize

(Chorus – part 2)
Whatever we divine
Well, I hope that you and I
Realize that what we've found it could survive
So if you reach out your hand, I'll give you mine

(Verse)
Now the rain has its own rhythm
And we dance in a different time
And I believe that there is some reason
Why it's me that you came to find

(Chorus – part 1)
And we are all searching for signs
Whether we look towards the sky
Or curse behind our eyes and rationalize

(Chorus – part 2)
Whatever we divine
Well, I hope that you and I
Realize that what we've found it could survive
So if you reach out your hand, I'll give you mine

Yeah, when you reach out your hand, I'll give you mine

Overall Meaning

Ron Pope's "Signs" is a song about finding connection with another person despite superficial differences such as race or appearance. The singer initially reflects on the physical differences between himself and the person he is addressing, acknowledging that they are not the same color and that he is unsure of why he is mentioning this. However, he goes on to emphasize that these differences do not matter in the grand scheme of things, as everyone is searching for signs and meaning in their lives. In the chorus, the singer highlights the universal human desire for purpose and connection, whether it be through looking to the skies or rationalizing their existence. When he uses the word "divine," he implies that these signs could come from a higher power, but ultimately he believes that the connections we make with each other are what truly matter. The final verse introduces the idea of rhythm and dancing, suggesting that despite having different backgrounds or experiences, the singer and the other person still share some common ground.

Overall, "Signs" is a song about finding commonalities and connection with others, despite differences in appearance or background. The repeated phrase, "If you reach out your hand, I'll give you mine," reinforces the idea that connection is possible if we are open to it.
