Fireflies
Ron Pope ( Cover ) Lyrics

When the street lights come on and the fireflies flicker
I am walking her home
Making plans

With her shoes in her hands I am watching her dance
As the hem of her dress gently kisses the grass

It suddenly rains on us
She is laughing and turns up her hands

Like autumn turns leaves
Winter will breathe cold on our necks
Snow in our paths
Wherever she goes
All that I know about us is that beautiful things never last
That's why fireflies flash

When this summer time ends we will not part as friends
Things were promised in blood
We have sinned

Now there's tears in her eyes as she's screaming goodbyes
I run 'long side the car
Turning numb to the sound

I notice a chill in the air
September is creeping up fast

Like autumn turns leaves
Winter will breathe cold on our necks
Snow in our paths
Wherever she goes
All that I know about us is that beautiful things never last
That's why fireflies flash

Innocence didn't mean we're immune to these things
Let's blame the passage of time
Love and loss
Truth
It costs more than I can spare right now
Maybe it's simpler to lie

Like autumn turns leaves
Winter will breathe cold on our necks
Snow in our paths
Wherever she goes
All that I know about us is that beautiful things never last
That's why fireflies flash

Oh
Oh
That's why fireflies flash

Oh
Oh

Overall Meaning

The lyrics of "Fireflies" by Ron Pope speak about a bittersweet story of a summer romance that has come to an end. The song begins with a picturesque scene of walking the girl home, surrounded by the ambience of streetlights and fireflies flickering. As they make plans, the singer observes the girl dancing barefoot on the grass, her dress hem gently kissing the ground. The sudden rain only adds to the surreal beauty of the moment, as the girl laughs and raises her hands, and the singer realizes that he wants to freeze this moment forever.

However, as summer draws to a close, the promise of the romance starts to fade. The singer speaks of something that was promised in blood, something that can never be undone. The girl is crying as they say their goodbyes, and the singer runs alongside her car, turning numb to the sound. The arrival of September only adds to the feeling of impending coldness, as winter will arrive soon and everything will change. The lyrics speak to the pain of acknowledging that beautiful things never last forever, and that all we can do is hold on to the precious moments in memory.

Overall, "Fireflies" is a powerful ballad that speaks to the universal experiences of love, loss and bittersweet nostalgia.

@AEDawn522

This song is so beautiful and powerful! I lost my mom last November she got sick and was diagnosed with terminal cancer in October and it turned fall overnight... The night she passed away, the leaves hadn't changed until that night and then before we knew it we were in the middle of winter. But I found life again after that long, gray and cold season. So in the late spring and summer the memories came flooding back, those of her teaching us to catch fireflies or what we always knew as lightning bugs! Thank you...!

Voice like his are one of the reasons why word 'magic' exists.
