I Wish
Ron S. Peno and The Superstitions Lyrics
Jump to: Overall Meaning ↴ Line by Line Meaning ↴
I wish I knew you place no one above me
Did I mistake this for a real romance?
I wish I knew, but only you can answer.
If you don't care, why let me hop[e and pray so
Don't lead me on, if I'm a fool just say so,
Should I keep dreaming on, or just forget you?
The lyrics of I Wish by Ron S. Peno and The Superstitions express feelings of confusion, insecurity, and longing for someone who may or may not return the same level of affection. The singer appears to be uncertain of their situation and whether their love interest actually reciprocates their emotions. They express their yearning to know, to have clarity on the situation, to determine whether they are in a real romance, or if they have mistaken something else for affection.
The lyrics paint a picture of someone who is invested in someone else and is hanging onto the hope that their feelings will be returned. The lines "If you don't care, why let me hope and pray so?" and "Don't lead me on, if I'm a fool just say so" suggest that the singer is aware that they might be deluding themselves, but they are desperate for affirmation from the other person. Itβs indicative of the kind of confusion that can come with mixed signals from a love interest. The vulnerability reflected in these lyrics is relatable, and Penoβs voice adds a raw, emotive quality to the words.
Overall, the lyrics are filled with a sense of uncertainty and fear of rejection, but thereβs also a glimmer of hope that things might work out. They capture the emotional complexity of romantic relationships and the difficult feelings that come with being in love with someone who may not feel the same way.
