Iris
Ronan Keating Lyrics

Jump to: Overall Meaning ↴  Line by Line Meaning ↴

And I'd give up forever to touch you
'cos I know that you feel me somehow
You're the closest to heaven that I'll ever be
And I don't want to go home right now

And all I can taste is this moment
And all I can breathe is your life
'cos sooner or later it's over
I just don't want to miss you tonight

And I don't want the world to see me
'cos I don't think that they'd understand
When everything's made to be broken
I just want you to know who I am

And you can't fight the tears that ain't coming
Or the moment of truth in your lies
When everything seems like the movies
Yeah, you'd bleed just to know you're alive

And I don't want the world to see me
'cos I don't think that they'd understand
When everything's made to be broken
I just want you to know who I am

And I don't want the world to see me
'cos I don't think that they'd understand
When everything's made to be broken
I just want you to know who I am

I just want you to know who I am

I just want you to know who I am
I just want you to know who I am

Overall Meaning

The lyrics of Ronan Keating's song "Iris" express the depth of longing and connection the singer feels towards a loved one. The first verse showcases the singer's willingness to do anything to be near the person they love. The line "I'd give up forever to touch you" conveys the depth of his emotion and willingness to sacrifice, while the line "you're the closest to heaven that I'll ever be" highlights the significance of the other person in his life. The singer is so caught up in the moment that he wants to prolong it, afraid that he might lose something important. In the second verse, the singer is purely living in the present moment, savoring and being lost in the atmosphere of the time he's spending with the loved one, and realizing that everything comes to an end, he doesn't want to waste a single second thinking that he may miss experiencing the blissful moment he is in.

The chorus "And I don't want the world to see me 'cause I don't think that they'd understand when everything's made to be broken, I just want you to know who I am" highlights the singer's fear of society's judgment and reinforces that the only person who can truly value and understand the relationship he holds with the other person is the person himself. In other words, the singer feels that whoever doesn't know him on a personal level can't possibly understand his true value, and so he wishes to keep himself to himself. The last verse decries the hopelessness felt by the singer in waking up to the reality of his lover's deceit. The line "you can't fight the tears that ain't coming or the moment of truth in your lies" is powerful and portrays the harrowing truth that the person he loves isn't who he thought she was. The repetition of the chorus reinforces that the singer's primary goal is to be known by the person he loves, for who he truly is.

I'll remember listening this song with my friend during a car trip in 2006. It's a great song, even Ronan was not the original singer of the song. 14 years later (2020) I've have opportunity meet Ronan personally and it's like dream come true. He's one of the great singer in 90's :)

I'm going to double post, too. I saw the Goo Goo Dolls at an outdoor 4th of July concert in front of Buffalo's city hall in 2004. The entire day it rained. And I was soaked for literally 9 hours. But when Iris started playing as it was pouring it became the most worthwhile and incredible musical experience I've ever had. The rain, the crowd, the Buffalove had made Iris sound the best it ever has. If you get the chance, try and find the Buffalo 4th of July show version of Iris.
