So far away
Ronnie Aldridge Lyrics

Jump to: Overall Meaning ↴  Line by Line Meaning ↴

So far away
Doesn't anybody stay in one place any more?
It would be so fine to see your face at my door
And it doesn't help to know you're just time away
Long ago I reached for you and there you stood
Holding you again would only do me good
Oh how I wish I could but you're so far away
One more song about moving along the highway
I can't say much of anything that's new
But if I could only work this life out my way
I'd rather spend it being close to you

But you're so far away
Doesn't anybody stay in one place any more?
It would be so fine to see your face at my door
And it doesn't help to know you're so far away
So far away, yeah, you're so far away

Traveling around sure gets me down and lonely
Nothing else to do but close my mind
And I sure hope the road don't get to own me
There's so many dreams that I've yet to find

But you're so far away
Doesn't anybody stay in one place any more?
It would be so fine to see your face at my door

And it doesn't help to know you're so far away
So far away, yeah, you're so far away

Overall Meaning

Ronnie Aldridge's song "So Far Away" is a melancholic reflection on the experience of distance, physical and emotional, from someone we love. The opening lines of the song lament the reality of people constantly moving from place to place, and the sense of loneliness and disorientation this causes. The singer expresses a deep longing to be reunited with the person they love, and the desire to see their face at the door. However, this only intensifies the pain of being so far away.

The second verse describes the sense of futility the singer feels when trying to express their feelings about the situation. The singer acknowledges that they have little new to say on the topic, but wishes they could have more control over their life in order to be closer to the one they love. The final verse touches on the difficulty of being on the road so much, and how it can exacerbate feelings of isolation and confusion. Despite this, the singer remains hopeful and committed to finding new dreams and experiences with their loved one as the ultimate goal.

Overall, "So Far Away" is a poignant and relatable reflection on the experience of distance, and the deep longing to be closer to someone we love.

Absolutely horrific. I've kept distance from how/why it happened as the fact that it was how randy died is devastating enough.

As I slowly let myself listen to more views on the day and the backstory of the "bus driver"..it seems to be likely that he was wasted and trying to either scare or kill his ex and didn't care who he took with him.

There's another interview where Rudy describes candidly hearing his friend screaming as they burned to death.

Beyond horrifying. When well known people die they always try to take the often graphic details and tuck them away.

All of it makes me nauseous.

I had a ticket to see Ozzy and Randy in New Orleans at the City Park Stadium, where the Beatles played when they came here.
This was right before the plane crash.
Ozzy still performed with the guitarist from Night Ranger taking Randy's place.
I believe that it was the Diary of a Madman Tour.
When Ozzy came out on stage he began singing and ripped a wig (no one knew) off his head.
Between songs he said that he had gone mad over the loss of Randy.
Needless to say, I was disappointed because no one could have played better than Randy.
This is the second time I got ripped off, as I didn't get to see Randy.
The second time was Zeppelin, when Plant's son died right before they were scheduled to play in Baton Rouge, Louisiana.
I did get to see Zeppelin two times prior to this tour.
If I'm not mistaken, Lynyrd Skynyrd's tour stopped short of playing in Baton Rouge after their plane crash.
I also got to see them at least twice before the incident.

It's an absolute tragedy regardless of whether it was an accident or otherwise. RIP Randy

Right, but in a sense, it's worse if some demented soul did it intentionally.

@jimtatro6550

Randy was an absolute beast on the guitar and left us way too soon. R.I.P.

@RickyMyers2354

We can only imagine what music he would have created in the past 40 years 🤘

@jogmas12

Randy was a music scholar and prodigy. His mother was a music teacher and he started playing instruments at a very young age.

Randy's parents were my music teachers in grammar school. Randy's dad played and taught ALL instruments in the school orchestra! His mom was a vocal teacher. They were very proud of Randy and I remember his dad bringing in an album and telling us it was #1 in Japan. This was 1971-1976. Rock on.

So much was in him
