Next Dio formed Ronnie Dio and The Prophets in the autumn of 1961, the band lasted until 1967. After this Dio formed The Electric Elves (1967-1969), The Elves (1969-1970), and finally the more well known Elf (1970-1975). From this Dio sang for Rainbow (1975-1978). After his work in Rainbow he went on to sing for Black Sabbath from (1979-1982), he later appeared in Black Sabbath again in late 1991-1992. After his split from Black Sabbath for the first time he went on to start his solo career known as Dio which started in 1983.
Ronnie James Dio is generally credited as the originator of the famous "mano cornuta" (or "devil horns") symbol in the metal world. According to him, his grandmother used to make the symbol as a sigil to ward off evil. Dio started using the gesture onstage in the early days of his career.
Roger Glover, the bass player of Deep Purple, had, as a solo artist, a world wide hit in 1974, "Love is All". It had, for those days, a very special videoclip, with a frog. It was Ronnie James Dio who did the vocals for that song.
In October 2006, it was confirmed that Dio would be joining Black Sabbath members Tony Iommi, Geezer Butler, and former Black Sabbath drummer Vinny Appice to tour under the moniker Heaven & Hell, the title of the first Dio era Black Sabbath album. They chose the name Heaven & Hell as Tony Iommi and Geezer Butler were still in Black Sabbath with Ozzy Osbourne and felt it was best to use a different moniker for the Dio version of the band. Original Black Sabbath drummer Bill Ward was to be involved in this project, but he later withdrew. In 2008 the band completed a 98-date world tour. The band released one album under the Heaven & Hell name, The Devil You Know, to critical and commercial acclaim. They also had planned to release a follow-up in 2010, but Dio died of stomach cancer on May 16 of that year.

'Cause it never, never, never has for me
In the palace of the virgin lies the chalice of the soul
And it's likely you might find the answer there
She had thirteen years of teenage tears
Never a helping hand
She had fourteen more of rain before
She was a photograph just ripped in half
A smile inside a frown
And then the light, the answer right
Inside her coming down
She said,
"I can go away
I can leave here
I can be invisible
I go away"
He was just eighteen and in between
A lady and a man
His daddy's girl in mama's world
That was when he ran
You know the word confused has been abused
But that's just what he was
And then the spark inside the dark
The answer came because
He said,
"You can go away
You can leave here
You can be, be, be, be....
Invisible"
Well I grew up quick and I felt the kick
Of life upon a stage
So I bought the book and then I took a fast look
At just the very last page
It was a single word that I'd just heard
From the two that came before
The only way to really stay
Is to walk right out the door
So I'll go away
I'm going to leave here
I can be invisible
Go away again
I can go away
When I leave here
I can be invisible
I said
When I go away
Lord you know it's right to leave here
So I just become invisible
I'm going away
Disappear before your eyes
You'll never touch me
You'll never feel me
You'll never see me again
Because I've just become unseen
When I'm a photograph that's been torn in half
We're only eighteen and we're in between
We need a helping hand to the holy land
To be invisible
To go away
The lyrics of the song "Invisible" by Ronnie James Dio are about the struggles of three different people who feel lost and misunderstood in the world. The first verse describes someone who has never been able to keep their circle unbroken and implies that they have gone through a lot of pain in life. However, the author suggests that the answer to their problems might be found in the chalice of the soul, which is located in the palace of the virgin. The second and third verses share the stories of two young people who are confused and searching for a way out. They discover that they can become invisible and leave their problems behind.
The overall message of the song seems to be that sometimes the only way to find true happiness is to walk away from the people and situations that are holding us back. By becoming invisible, the characters in the song are able to escape their problems and start over fresh. The song has a melancholic and reflective tone and suggests that finding true happiness and peace in life can be difficult.
