Fuel to The Fire
Rory Gallagher Lyrics

Jump to: Overall Meaning ↴  Line by Line Meaning ↴

Had me a whiskey, and I chased it,
Got me some trouble, gonna face it,
But if I had a trump card, I would place it,
That's for sure....yeah....

I had a dream, but I can't trace it,
I call out your name, so you might hear it,
But it only adds fuel, to the fire,
In my soul....yeah....

If I could just, re-write the pages,
Wake up with peace, with the way it is,
I don't wanna live in this world, if you can't grace it,
Anymore....anymore.....yeah...

Friends try to raise my spirits, higher,
Well, there's no doubting, the stong desire,
They don't feel the heat, of the fire,
In my soul....In my soul....

Had me a whiskey, and I chased it,
Got me some trouble, gonna face it,

But if I had a trump card, I would place it,
Yeah...At your door....oh yeah...

Overall Meaning

The song "Fuel to The Fire" by Rory Gallagher is a powerful expression of internal struggle as the lyrics talk about chasing whiskey, facing trouble and a dream that can't be traced. The verses reflect on personal feelings of inadequacy and frustration with oneself, specifically the inability to control the fire in one's soul despite efforts to seek comfort in alcohol or the outside world. The singer drops hints that there is something unresolved in his life, something that is causing him to feel like he is always on the brink of crossing a line.

The chorus of the song is haunting as it repeats the line “It only adds fuel to the fire, in my soul” - a powerful metaphor that communicates the feeling of being consumed by inner turmoil, and no matter what one does to try to put out the flame, it just grows larger. The singer longs for a way out, to "rewrite the pages" and "wake up with peace" but feels trapped and unable to escape. The song ends with the repeated line "If I had a trump card, I would place it" suggesting a longing for an easy solution to the struggle within.

All this man had was his guitar and yet he played like no other could, his songs were stories and poems that you believe in completely, Rory was the real deal by a long Irish country mile.

He was, sad to say he isn't. I would have gave all to take my son and watch this guy Jesus Christ he was good

@daviemcf

I saw Rory thirteen times at his best between 1968-1978...what a performer and so underrated, a true bluesman.

I'm only or just 39 years old. I live in Poland. Rory came here once, about 20 years before I was born. I was only ten when he died. When I was able to learn about him and his music I got crushed with the fact that I would never have a chance to see him live, and I would give almost all gigs I have seen to see just one set of Rory's. He was absolutely extraordinary! And I am pissed that media don't bring his music back to younger generations

One of the greatest irish artists ever!

@mahesh29950

Yeah so true ..but Why to limit his infinite talent and music by calling him an Irish rock/ blues star .. he was world"s best Guitarist !

@joschafinger126

However true the "Irish" bit here may be, it's kind of obsolete. If it's important to you, say, "One of the best blues artists ever, and he was Irish." 😉

@gizmono2869

You older folks were so lucky to have such great music this dude is an actual amazing musician among all thee others kudos
