I'm Movin' On
Rosanne Cash Lyrics

That big eight wheeler rollin' down the track
Means your true lovin' mama ain't comin' back
Cause I'm movin' on, I'll soon be gone
You were flyin' too high for my little sky
So I'm movin' on

That big loud whistle as it blew and blew
Said hello to the south land we're comin' to you
And we're movin' on, oh hear my song
You had the laugh on me so I've set you free
And I'm movin' on

I told you baby from time to time
But you just wouldn't listen or pay me no mind
Now I'm movin' on, I'm rollin' on
You have broken your vow and it's all over now
And I'm movin' on

But someday baby when you've had your play
You're gonna want your momma but your momma will say
Keep movin' on, you stayed away too long
Oh I'm through with you too bad you're blue
And I'm movin' on

That big eight wheeler rollin' down the track
Means your true lovin' mama ain't comin' back
Cause I'm movin' on, I'll soon be gone
You were flyin' too high for my little sky
So I'm movin' on

Movin' on
I'll soon be gone

Overall Meaning

The song "I'm Movin' On" by Rosanne Cash is a country classic that tells the story of a woman who has decided to leave her man behind and move on with her life. The "big eight-wheeler rollin' down the track" signifies that she is leaving for good and her "true lovin' mama ain't comin' back". She has made up her mind and is "movin' on" to a new life, leaving behind a relationship that has become toxic and unfulfilling.

The lyrics suggest that the woman tried to make things work, but her partner was not receptive to her needs. She tells him that he was "flyin' too high for my little sky" and that she is setting him free. She had warned him before that she might leave, but he didn't listen. Now, she has "broken [her] vow" to stay with him, and is "movin' on" for her own happiness and wellbeing.

The chorus repeats the idea that the woman is leaving for good, and while her partner may regret his mistakes one day, it will be too late. She has moved on to a better life without him. The song is a powerful statement about the importance of self-love and the courage it takes to leave a toxic relationship behind.

I love love LOVE the rootsy authenticity this woman has now. She's done the commercial mixes, sold the catchy records, evolved into I-can-do-anything maturity and reached for her roots, with richly satisfying results. Daddy's proud, Rosanne.

Slowing down the Hank Snow classic to give it a bluesy, sensuous feel was sheer brilliance.  In fact, the whole album is great.
