Cash released her first single in 1979, a duet with Bobby Bare called "We Don't Need No Memories Hangin' 'Round". Two years later, she had her first country No. 1 (and the biggest commercial hit of her career), "Seven Year Ache". Although Cash was a prominent country star throughout the '80s, alongside fellow decade-defining artists Emmylou Harris, Juice Newton, and Dolly Parton, her music was anything but traditional: She topped the charts with songs written not only by herself, but by her father ("Tennessee Flat Top Box"), John Hiatt ("The Way We Make a Broken Heart"), Tom Petty ("Never Be You") and the Beatles ("I Don't Want to Spoil the Party"), "I Don't Know Why You Don't Want Me", which won her a Grammy in 1985, and "It's Such a Small World", a 1987 duet with Rodney Crowell on his album Diamonds & Dirt, provided further hits. A sampling of these songs and more are included on the compilation Hits 1979-1989. In 1979, she married Rodney Crowell, who was to produce most of her hit records. Their stormy marriage lasted until 1992; its break-up is chronicled in Cash's Interiors and in Crowell's album Life Is Messy. Cash later married John Leventhal, who produced her albums The Wheel, 10 Song Demo, Rules of Travel, and Black Cadillac.
To date, Cash has had more than twenty top 40 country singles, including eleven chart-toppers, but none since 1990, and she has left Nashville in both spirit and body to pursue her artistic vision. Although she had recorded all of her hits for Columbia Records' Nashville division, she released 10 Song Demo for the pop division of Capitol. Cash resurfaced in 2003 with Rules of Travel. The album features guest appearances by Sheryl Crow and Steve Earle, as well as a tune penned by Joe Henry and the Wallflowers' Jakob Dylan. Cash's latest album, entitled Black Cadillac, was released by Capitol Records in January 2006 to critical acclaim. Many of the songs were written by Cash and address the losses (within a 24-month span) of her step-mother, her father, her step-sister (Rosey Nix Adams) and then finally her mother on Cash's fiftieth birthday.
I Wonder
Rosanne Cash Lyrics
Jump to: Overall Meaning ↴ Line by Line Meaning ↴
My heart jumps all about
My mind can't figure out what to do
'Cause I've been disillusioned
Enough by love turned blue
Your love could be true...but I wonder
Am I supposed to think
And deny the part of me
That says you'd leave me too
'Cause yesterday reminds me
That what I've lost is gone
Your love may linger on...but I wonder
In the song "I Wonder" by Rosanne Cash, the lyrics describe the confusion and uncertainty that comes with falling in love. The singer mentions that every time she is near the person she loves, her heart jumps all about, but also mentions that she has been disillusioned enough by love to question whether their love could be true. This inner conflict is evident in the line "My mind can't figure out what to do."
The chorus of the song emphasizes the singer's doubts about the relationship, with repeated mention of her wondering whether the person's love will be true. She also seems torn between her desire to believe in the relationship and her fear of being hurt again. The line "And deny the part of me that says you'd leave me too" suggests that she has been hurt in the past and fears being hurt again.
The song's final verse reflects on the past and the inevitability of losing things in life. The singer acknowledges that what she has lost is gone, but wonders whether the person's love will continue. Ultimately, the song portrays the struggle of balancing hope and skepticism in relationships, as well as the fear of being hurt again.

Every time I'm near you
Whenever I am in your presence
My heart jumps all about
My heart starts to beat faster and in a more erratic manner
My mind can't figure out what to do
My brain cannot process or make sense of the situation
'Cause I've been disillusioned
Because I have had my hopes and beliefs shattered
Enough by love turned blue
Due to the sadness and heartache caused by past romantic relationships
Your love could be true...but I wonder
Although you may have genuine feelings for me, I still have doubts and uncertainties
Am I supposed to think
Should I really believe
That your love will be true
That you will be faithful and sincere in your affection for me
And deny the part of me
And ignore the aspect of myself
That says you'd leave me too
That fears you will also abandon or betray me like others have
'Cause yesterday reminds me
Because memories of my past experiences make me recall
That what I've lost is gone
That what I have left behind will never return or be regained
Your love may linger on...but I wonder
Even if you still love me, I still have doubts and reservations about our future together

Sounds happy and haunting at the same time. Roseanne and the late Karen Carpenter can hit this place like few others. I missed her at Beverly Cabot theater. Never miss an opportunity like that again.

Going through her song book - I'm now not considering Rosanne past any category rock/country/pop etc. She is just her own genre "Rosanne Cash". I also include her husband Jon Levenstal's's contribution, thinking's back when Karens casual fans discounted Richard Carpenter
