You Belong To Me
Rose McGowan Lyrics
Jump to: Overall Meaning ↴ Line by Line Meaning ↴
Watch the sunrise on a tropic isle
Just remember darlin' all the while
You belong to me
See the market place in Old Algiers
Send me photographs and souvenirs
Just remember when a dream appears
I'll be so alone without you
Maybe you'll be lonesome too, and blue
Fly the ocean in a silver plane
See the jungle when it's wet with rain
Just remember 'til you're home again
You belong to me
(This portion, sung by background singers,
omitted in later release)
(I'll be so alone without you
Maybe you'll be lonesome too, and blue)
Fly the ocean in a silver plane
See the jungle when it's wet with rain
Just remember 'til you're home again
You belong to me
In Rose McGowan's song "You Belong To Me," the lyrics are sung from the perspective of someone who is in a long distance relationship. The lyrics are a message to a lover who is traveling or living far away. The singer of the song encourages their lover to explore the world, but also reminds them that they belong to each other. The verses describe different landscapes and experiences, from the pyramids along the Nile to the market place in Old Algiers, to flying over the ocean in a silver plane and seeing the jungle when it's wet with rain. The chorus, "You belong to me," is repeated throughout the song, serving as a reminder that no matter how far they travel, they still belong to each other.
The lyrics also express the singer's fear of loneliness, as they sing "I'll be so alone without you, maybe you'll be lonesome too, and blue." The repetition of "you belong to me" could also be interpreted as a way for the singer to reassure themselves that their lover will return, and that they'll be together again. Overall, the song captures the bittersweet feeling of a long distance relationship, where each partner is free to explore the world but also deeply connected to each other.
