Astra Wally he's a real mean cat
He gets around with caps in his hat
He looks at pain with a nod and a wink
Oh Astra Wally you're a super fun thing

Astra Wally, you super fun thing
Astra Wally, you super fun thing
Astra Wally he's a super cool
Oh when the time we we're goin' to school
He gets around in a Jag Mark 10
Go do a deal Wally, go kill a friend

Go do a deal Wally, kill another friend
Go do a deal Wally, kill another friend

Astra Wally ?? to see
He don't get shot, he go by O.D.
The cops catch Wally take the wind from his sails
It ain't too funky comin' down in jail

It ain't funky baby, comin' down in jail
It ain't funky mama, comin' down in jail
It ain't funky comin' down

It ain't funky, it ain't funky
It ain't funky, it ain't funky mama

Astra Wally is a real mean cat
He gets around with cat's in his hat
He looks at pain with a nod and a wink
Oh Astra Wally you're a super fun thing

Astra Wally, you super fun thing
Astra Wally, you super fun thing
Astra Wally, you super fun thing
Astra Wally, you super fun think
Think, think, think, think, think
Think, think, think, think, think
You super fun thing

Oh, Astra Wally you're a super fun thing
Astra Wally you're a super fun thing
Astra Wally you're a super fun thing
Astra Wally you're a super fun thing

It ain't funky comin' down in jail

Overall Meaning

The lyrics to Rose Tattoo's "Astra Wally" describe a character named Astra Wally who is portrayed as a cool, mean, and dangerous person who gets around in a Jaguar Mark 10 and wears a cap with bullets in it. The chorus repeatedly calls him a "super fun thing," despite his violent tendencies. The lyrics also suggest that Astra Wally is involved in illegal activities, such as dealing drugs and killing friends. However, the final verse indicates that his criminal behavior eventually catches up with him when he is caught by the police and sent to jail.

The tone of the song is ambiguous, as the lyrics are both celebratory and cautionary about the character of Astra Wally. On one hand, the characterization of Astra Wally as someone who is seemingly invincible and able to get away with any crime is portrayed as cool and desirable. On the other hand, the warning that being caught and sent to jail is not a pleasant experience makes it clear that there are consequences to his actions.

Overall, "Astra Wally" can be interpreted as a commentary on the allure of the "bad boy" image and how it can lead individuals down a dangerous path.

I had the privilege of seeing them in Belfast in 1981 or 2 I will never forget the energy these guys created, and I've seen a fair few bands in my 50 years... but Rose Tattoo... it was the gig that blew me away the most on account of the power... remember, nothing was digital then, no help, just skill and professionalism. And a big fucking stack on the stage Thank you boys, thank you ever so much, for a beautiful and lasting memory.

1981, they tragically didn't go back to Europe or Britain in '82 and blew it. Bad luck and bad managers!

Adam Seymour

You should do his later Aussie venues omg they totally rock!

Make sure you see another great Aussie band .... Midnight Oil, they will also blow your mind. Their energy is just outrageous. After about 2 songs you become completely engulfed in their energy and music and you don't come back to reality until about 30 mins after the concert is finished. This is what is just awesome about Aussie rock bands, they take you on a complete trip and don't let you return until they are finished with you.

Supporting Rainbow? I saw them first at Leeds, in 82, opening for Ritchie, then, later that year, at Reading!
