Clooney's first recordings, in May 1946, were for Columbia Records. She sang with Tony Pastor's big band. Clooney continued working with the Pastor band until 1949, making her last recording with the band in May of that year and her first as a solo artist a month later, still for Columbia.
She came to prominence in the early 1950s with the novelty hit Come On-a My House written by William Saroyan and his cousin Ross Bagdasarian (better known as David Seville, the father figure of Alvin and the Chipmunks), which was followed by other pop numbers such as "Botch-a-Me" (a cover version of the Italian song Ba-Ba-Baciami Piccina by Alberto Rabagliati), "Mambo Italiano", "Tenderly", "Half as Much", "Hey There" and "This Ole House", although she had success as a jazz vocalist. Clooney's career languished in the 1960s, partly due to problems related to depression and drug addiction, but revived in 1977, when her White Christmas co-star Bing Crosby asked her to appear with him at a show marking his 50th anniversary in show business. She continued recording until her death in 2002. She was the aunt of Academy Award winning actor George Clooney; mother-in-law of singer Debby Boone; and sister to former television personality Nick Clooney. She was the ex-wife of Jose Ferrer; mother of actor Miguel Ferrer
Clooney was diagnosed with lung cancer at the end of 2001. Around this time, she gave her last concert, in Hawaii, backed by the Honolulu Symphony Pops; her last song was "God Bless America".
Be My Life's Companion

Want no silver threads among the gold.
Want no silver threads; want some action instead.
Want no silver threads among the gold.
Be my life's companion, and you'll never grow old.
I'll love you so much that you'll never grow old.
When there's joy in living, you just never grow old.
People who are lonely are old at 33.
Don't let it happen to you; don't let it happen to me.
Be my life's companion, and you'll never grow old.
You'll never grow old, no, you'll never grow old.
Love and youth and happiness are yours to have and hold.
Be my life's companion, and you'll never grow old.
I know a man who's lonely, and he's old at 33.
No one wants to be old at 33.
Your disposition sours like a lemon on a tree.
Don't let it happen to you, and don't let it happen to me.
Be my life's companion, and you'll never grow old.
Yes, I'll love you so much that you'll never grow old.
Love and youth and happiness are yours to have and hold.
Be my life's companion, be my life's companion, and you'll never grow old.
The song "Be My Life's Companion" is about the importance of companionship and love in keeping one's youthfulness and happiness. The opening lines, "Want no silver threads among the gold," allude to the silver threads of hair that come with age, but the singer expresses that she wants no sign of aging to mar the happiness and joy of a fulfilling life. Instead of simply wishing to avoid growing old, she advocates for actively seeking out love and companionship as a way to stay young at heart.
The chorus, "Be my life's companion, and you'll never grow old," highlights the importance of having someone to share life's joys and challenges with. The singer promises to love her companion so much that they will never feel old or lonely. She warns against the tragedy of loneliness, stating that people who are alone are old at 33, regardless of their actual age. The closing lines further emphasize this idea, as the singer speaks of the importance of maintaining a cheerful disposition and avoiding bitterness.
Overall, the song is a plea for the listener to choose love and companionship over solitude and bitterness, emphasizing that a fulfilled life free from the burdens of age is possible with the right partner.
