They played their first concerts in 1991 and released their first album "Soubrette werd' ich nie" one year later. Their first taste of chart success came in 1997 when their 6th album "Die Schlampen sind müde" (English: 'the trollops are tired') hit the German album-Top 40.
1998 they participated in the German national final of the Eurovision Song Contest, finishing second behind Guildo Horn with their song "Herzensschöner".
Two years later their album "Kassengift" hit No.1 in the German album charts. The later albums "Herz", "Das grosse Leben" (2006) and "Das grosse Leben live" (2006) also reached the top position.
In 2008, they released a new album "Die Suche geht weiter" (english: The search goes on), and the first single to be released was "Gib mir Sonne" (English: Give me sun). The first single made it to number 1 on the German charts. The next single to be released from the same album will be on the 3.11.2008, called "Wie weit ist vorbei" (English: How far is over).
They split up on December 20, 2012.
Total Eclipse
Rosenstolz Lyrics
Jump to: Overall Meaning ↴ Line by Line Meaning ↴
Argue about what they've got
Making the planet so hot
Hot as a holocaust (-caust, -caust, -caust)
Blow up
Everything's going to go up
Even if you don't show up
In your chemise Lacoste
Total eclipse
It's a total eclipse
It's a total eclipse
Of the sun
World come to this
With the total eclipse
Just a slip of your lips
And you're done (and you're done, and you're done)
And you're done (done)
And you're done (done)
And you're done (done)
And you're done (done)
Fallout
Nobody left to crawl out
If someone calls we're all out
Turning into French fries (fries, fries, fries)
Last dance
Let the entire cast dance
Due to dismembered
Last dance
As we get atomized
Total eclipse
It's a total eclipse
It's a total eclipse
Of the sun
World come to this
With the total eclipse
Just a slip of your lips
And you're done (and you're done, and you're done)
And you're done (done)
And you're done (done)
And you're done (done)
And you're done (done)
And you're done
Total eclipse
It's a total eclipse
It's a total eclipse
Of the sun
World come to this
With the total eclipse
Just a slip of your lips
And you're done (and you're done)
Total eclipse
It's a total eclipse
It's a total eclipse
Of the sun
And you're done
And you're done
And you're done
And you're done
And you're done
The song "Total Eclipse" by Rosenstolz feat. Nina Hagen appears to be a commentary on the state of the world and its impending doom. The opening lines suggest that those in power argue about their possessions, causing the planet to become hotter and potentially leading to a holocaust. The use of the word "holocaust" is likely a reference to the Holocaust, a genocide of Jewish people during World War II, and suggests that the destruction caused by those in power would be devastating.
The chorus of the song repeats the phrase "total eclipse," which can be interpreted as a metaphor for the destruction that is about to befall the world. The line "just a slip of your lips and you're done" suggests that any misstep could lead to catastrophe. The second verse continues this theme by describing fallout and the idea that there would be nobody left to crawl out, a reference to the aftermath of a nuclear disaster. The line "turning into French fries" adds a bit of humor to the otherwise bleak lyrics, but the image of people being reduced to nothing more than a fast food item is still unsettling.
Overall, "Total Eclipse" is a song that expresses concern for the state of the planet and the actions of those in power. The lyrics suggest that the world is on the brink of destruction and any small mistake could be catastrophic. The repetition of the phrase "total eclipse" reinforces this idea and serves as a warning to humanity.
