1. Philadelphia quartet Rosetta push the boundaries between post-hardcore, sludge, post-metal, progressive rock, post-rock, ambient, and space rock, with influences as diverse as Neurosis, Isis, My Bloody Valentine, Frodus, and Stars of the Lid. The band somewhat humorously self-describes its music as "metal for astronauts", and its members are very interested in astronomy and space travel. Their first album (The Galilean Satellites, 2005) was an especially ambitious project: the goal was to record two discs of equal length (one a metal album, the other a noise/ambient/drone album), each of which could stand on its own, but played together would create a third, more intense experience. The technique fits well with the band's unique experiments in noise, sampling, feedback and power. The sheer amount of aural input means every listen becomes a new experience, allowing the listener to pick up on more and more layers within the sounds.
Their next album (Wake/Lift, 2007) was a bit more restrained, but for this reason, really allows the band's songwriting to solidify and proves them worthy of the "mainstream" of the avant-metal world.
The third full-length album, A Determinism of Morality, was released in May of 2010, and featured shorter, faster songs, with a bit more attention to technical playing and compositional structure.
The fourth full-length album saw a change in release strategy by the band. Released through its own bandcamp The Anaesthete was released as a 'pay what you wish' release on August 8th 2013. The band hoped that the money paid by the fans would allow them to invest in a vinyl run in the USA as a CD/Vinyl deal was in place for Europe ( Debemur Morti Productions) and Australia (Monolith). On August 15th the band posted a facebook update on its DIY 'experiment'.

Pondering what star will bring me where,
when will I get there,
who will I find,
calling out my name.
Across the forever night,
the monolith,
that knows the tales,
dwelling inside man,
telling of the names,
dwelling inside me.
Take me to see her,
the monolith,
that knows the tales,
of my own misery,
crying out now.
Europa please,
hear my own screams,
how long will I.
How will I move on
How will I move on
Please take me again,
crossing over,
the nomad in roam,
searching on.
Stifled thoughts.
No way crossing over.
No way.
No way crossing over.
Take me away.
I’m Pondering what star will bring me where,
when will I get there,
who will I find,
calling out my name in the open.
The monolith,
dwelling inside man,
through the open.
The lyrics to Rosetta's song "Départe" paint a picture of a person in search of their identity and purpose. The first line, "Mother Europa calling me," can be interpreted as a longing to connect with one's roots or homeland. The singer is then shown pondering about their journey and its ultimate destination - what star will lead them there, who will they find when they get there - while calling out their own name.
The line "take me to see her, the monolith, that knows the tales, dwelling inside man" is particularly powerful, referencing a larger-than-life structure that holds within the stories of humanity. This monolith is likely a metaphor for the singer's own life experiences and the vastness of human history.
The next line, "of my own misery, crying out now," shows that the search for identity and meaning is not always an easy one, and may come hand-in-hand with pain and suffering. The repetition of "how will I move on" and "take me away" suggests a feeling of being stuck or trapped.
The final line, "through the open," implies that the singer has found some sort of clarity or revelation. Perhaps they have realized that their search for identity and meaning can only truly be answered through open-mindedness and a willingness to explore.
