1. Philadelphia quartet Rosetta push the boundaries between post-hardcore, sludge, post-metal, progressive rock, post-rock, ambient, and space rock, with influences as diverse as Neurosis, Isis, My Bloody Valentine, Frodus, and Stars of the Lid. The band somewhat humorously self-describes its music as "metal for astronauts", and its members are very interested in astronomy and space travel. Their first album (The Galilean Satellites, 2005) was an especially ambitious project: the goal was to record two discs of equal length (one a metal album, the other a noise/ambient/drone album), each of which could stand on its own, but played together would create a third, more intense experience. The technique fits well with the band's unique experiments in noise, sampling, feedback and power. The sheer amount of aural input means every listen becomes a new experience, allowing the listener to pick up on more and more layers within the sounds.
Their next album (Wake/Lift, 2007) was a bit more restrained, but for this reason, really allows the band's songwriting to solidify and proves them worthy of the "mainstream" of the avant-metal world.
The third full-length album, A Determinism of Morality, was released in May of 2010, and featured shorter, faster songs, with a bit more attention to technical playing and compositional structure.
The fourth full-length album saw a change in release strategy by the band. Released through its own bandcamp The Anaesthete was released as a 'pay what you wish' release on August 8th 2013. The band hoped that the money paid by the fans would allow them to invest in a vinyl run in the USA as a CD/Vinyl deal was in place for Europe ( Debemur Morti Productions) and Australia (Monolith). On August 15th the band posted a facebook update on its DIY 'experiment'.

Rosetta Lyrics

Cast shadows at ice seas
Transmit data encode
A final message for beloved
A withering on me
The withering of me now
So sound your horn without me
Please lay your hands before I go
Sound your horn
Let this go
The iron core set to implode
The withering on me
The withering of me now
"The problem with now is no matter how much we want it to, it doesn't last forever"
A withering
From within
A spore casting on this skin
And if I sing with hollowed hands will burrowing cease
Radio waves
Hollowed hands holding me still
Hollowed hands
Burrowing into
Radio waves
Saturn is
Sing me to sleep
The lyrics of Rosetta's song Release depict the feeling of mortality and the acceptance of it. The first line "Heavenly bounded by time" alludes to the timeless space beyond earth, and how even that is eventually bound by time. The line "cast shadows at ice seas" creates an image of a place that is desolate and forgotten, where even shadows are cast on frozen waters. The following lines "transmit data encode, a final message for beloved" suggests that the singer is sending their last message to their loved ones before their passing.
The chorus "please lay your hands before I go" and "sound your horn without me" indicate that the singer is preparing for their death and wants their loved ones to let go. The line "the iron core set to implode" could allude to the singer's body shutting down, and the "withering of me now" could be a reference to their body withering away.
The second verse seems to describe the process of dying and how it affects the body. The line "a spore casting on this skin" may represent the disease or illness that is affecting the body. The line "and if I sing with hollowed hands, will burrowing cease" suggests that the singer is trying to find solace through prayer or singing, hoping that the pain will subside. The final lyrics "Saturn is sing me to sleep" could represent the singer's acceptance of death, and how they want to be transported to space and released from their pain.
Overall, the song Release is a poignant depiction of mortality and the acceptance of death. It speaks to the human experience of accepting our own impermanence and leaving behind a final message for our loved ones before we depart.
