Sweet comic Valentine
You make me smile with my heart
Your looks are laughable
They are unphotographable
Yet you're my favorite work of art
Is your figure less than Greek
When you open it to speak
Are you smart?
Are you smart?
Don't change your hair for me
But if you care for me
Stay, stay my funny Valentine, stay
Each day is valentine's day
Rossana Casale's song My Funny Valentine is a soulful romantic ballad that speaks about the beauty of imperfection, and how love can make even the flaws seem perfect. The song begins with the lines "My funny valentine, sweet comic Valentine, you make me smile with my heart." Here the singer is saying that her lover may not be conventionally attractive, but their personality and actions are what makes her heart smile. The line "Your looks are laughable, they're unphotographable, yet you're my favorite work of art" speaks about how beauty can be found beyond physical appearances, and how real beauty lies in the soul of the person. The singer refers to her lover as a "work of art," emphasizing that love can view a person as something beautiful despite their flaws.
The verse "Is your figure less than Greek? Is your mouth a little weak? When you open it to speak, are you smart?" portrays how the singer sees the imperfections in her lover, but she still loves them dearly. She is not concerned with the conventional beauty standards set by society as she loves her funny valentine for who they are. The singer requests her valentine not to change for her and says, "But if you care for me, stay, stay my funny Valentine, stay. Each day is Valentine's day." This line speaks about the importance of being true to oneself and not pretending to be something else to please someone. It also captures the essence of true love, where every day spent together is celebrated like Valentine's Day.
