Cry
Roxette Lyrics

Jump to: Overall Meaning ↴  Line by Line Meaning ↴

Living here without you is not an easy way of life.
I spend my time without you, I try to make it all worthwhile.
Standing in a rainfall coming down from the sky.
Why should I cry over you?
Why should I cry cry cry over you?
I keep on thinking about you.
I've got no private pride to hide.
I've built my world around you like a call without reply.
My love has lost direction, she's got the sun in her eyes.
Why should I cry...
Hearing your footsteps, loud on my stairs (a-walking...)--living without you.
Feeling the sweet sweet smell of love in the air (I can feel it...)--living
without you.
Kissing the face that I see everywhere but I'm living without you, living
without.
Why should I cry cry cry over you?
Oh, hearing your footsteps, loud on my stairs (a-walking...)--living without
you.
Kissing the face that I see everywhere but

I'm living without you, I'm living without.
Cry cry cry over you? Why should I cry...

Overall Meaning

In Roxette's song "Cry," the singer expresses the struggles of living without their lover. The song is a heartfelt ballad that details the difficulty of moving on from a relationship. The first verse describes the singer's daily routine without their lover and how they try to make the most of their time. However, they cannot help but feel the pain of their absence, and they ask themselves why they should cry over them.

The second verse continues with vivid imagery of the singer hearing their lover's steps on the stairs and smelling the sweet aroma of love in the air, even though they are no longer together. The bittersweet feeling of kissing the face of someone they see everywhere but cannot have is a constant reminder of what they have lost. However, they still question why they should cry over their absence.

The repetition of the line "Why should I cry cry cry over you?" highlights the singer's attempt to convince themselves that there is no point in dwelling on the past. The chorus is a plea for self-acceptance and the strength to move on despite the pain.

Overall, "Cry" is a poignant reflection on the universal experience of heartbreak and the struggles of letting go.

My favourite Roxette song. Have the original LP and CD. Hearing of Marie's passing was one of the most heartbreaking things ever. She was truly one of the best female vocalists out there. R.I.P. Marie Frederiksson.

It’s a pity that this track didn’t hit it right the rest, but I love this. Especially Marie’s voice and the soothing music makes it a perfect night song. RIP Marie you will always be one of my favorite female vocalist

This is a song of a singular, moving beauty of a band that normally lacks a lyrical depth. Thank you so much for placing this song on YouTube!

I used to listen to this song when it came out so much! In 1992 I became an exchange student, went to the U.S. and met a german girl. I fell in love with her. At the end of the year she went back to Germany, I went back to Venezuela. I was very heartbroken, the years passes and I used to go to an island with my family all the time and I used to listen this song and many others. She was always in the back of my mind.

11 years later she contacted me again, she was now 27. She went to visit me to Venezuela. We went to the island and it was so surreal having someone from your imagination poping up to reality. I took her to a place, an abandoned por at night. Brought a few bottles and we started to listen to this song. Incredible, spending time under the moonlight.
