You're On My Mind
Roy Lyrics

Jump to: Overall Meaning ↴  Line by Line Meaning ↴

(Yeah)

I would rather be alone
Spin my vinyl records home
Than lay with some pretty girl
Who doesn't dig my Robert Johnson tunes
Tuesday break coffee black
Wear my fawn fedora hat
Sunny days, fifty ways
That I find blows my mind
Nothing can compare to this
Can never miss my favorite bliss

Oh no no, no no no
Yeah yeah, yeah yeah

You're my ace, winning hand
Lucky starlight wonderland
Shinning bright diamonds, baby
Just a little more
You're my ace, jammin' band
Guitar rhythm on the sand
Every little thing's gonna be alright

We move in water, shore to shore
Without a boat or any oar
We always find compass point
Nassau feels very good to me
You look like Candice Swanepoel
Secret romantic fool
On cloudy days, one hundred ways
That I find blows my mind
Nothing can compare to this
Can never miss my favorite bliss

Oh I know, I know, I know, no no
Yeah yeah, yeah yeah

You're my ace, winning hand
Lucky starlight wonderland
Shinning bright diamonds, baby
Just a little more
You're my ace, jammin' band
Guitar rhythm on the sand
Every little thing's gonna be alright

You and I, we belong together
We make life better
(Oh jammin', oh jammin', na na)
You and I, we can sail together
Across any weather

Oh I know, I know, I know, no no
Yeah yeah, yeah yeah

(Alright)

You're my ace, winning hand
Lucky starlight wonderland
Shinning bright diamonds, baby
Just a little more
You're my ace, jammin' band
Guitar rhythm on the sand
Every little thing's gonna be alright

(Oh, and every little thing's gonna be alright)

You're my ace, winning hand (oh you're my ace)
Lucky starlight wonderland
Shinning bright diamonds, baby
Just a little more now
You're my ace, jammin' band (oh jammin')
Guitar rhythm on the sand (oh jammin', na na)
Every little thing's gonna be alright

(Oh, and every little thing's gonna be alright)

With every little bit
Every little hit's going faster

With every little bit
Every little hit's going better

Overall Meaning

The song "You're On My Mind" by Roy is a fun and upbeat love song that describes the singer's feelings about his significant other. The first verse starts with the singer expressing his preference of being alone rather than being with someone who doesn't like the same things as him, such as listening to Robert Johnson tunes. The singer then describes his daily routine of wearing his fedora hat and enjoying the little things in life like coffee and sunny days. He can't help but think of his significant other and how they surpass any joy that he can find in his daily rituals. The chorus is an ode to his partner, calling them his "ace," his lucky starlight wonderland, and jammin' band. No matter what, everything is going to be alright as long as they are together.

The second verse talks about the adventures the couple has together, whether it's across the water or in Nassau. He compares his partner's beauty to that of Candice Swanepoel and reveals that he's a secret romantic fool in the midst of cloudy days. The chorus repeats itself, but emphasizes that the two are better together and can conquer anything as a team. The bridge brings in a new element, where the lyrics express that the longer they're together, the better their love gets. With each hit, it gets faster and better, solidifying the idea that their love will only continue to grow.

The overall message of the song is that no matter how mundane daily life can be, love makes everything better. One can have all the little things they enjoy, but it's nothing compared to the joy their partner brings them. The chorus of "You're On My Mind" is a reminder to appreciate the person you love and to enjoy each day as it comes.

LYRICS

If you believe in yourself
You’ll know the real you
It’s coming from within
Sincerely, sincerely

You subject yourself to being vulnerable
Not knowing why you fall in love
And so you become
What you are made to become
It’s not at all fair that I feel as I do
Tell me something to make me feel better

My sister, I am your mind. Within you there’s a never-
ending magnitude of infinite strength, wisdom and will.
You travel my roads through life never knowing your own
true reality because my thoughts remain like distant
quasars. You abuse me by never letting me say and do as
I feel. Our thoughts split from love affairs to choice
of friends. We argue like two enemies yet we are good
friends.

Now, there are moments when we harmonize with each
other, and become one with nature and reality. But
these times are few. When after you have replenished
yourself, the fear of the truth sets in. We split, and
you start to run again. Running, running, running.
Running through women, men, jobs, people and life
looking for the answer when I had it all along. But I
smile… because I am your mind.

I was your mind yesterday; I am your mind today; and
I’ll be your mind tomorrow. And as our end draws near
we will become closer. But you and I, you and I, we
will never be one, for I will part from you and you
will part from me; you finding another mind and I
another soul. And we’ll travel on and on.

By the way, I need more than sex to nourish my
equilibrium. But I do need sex. I also need sun, trees,
stars, creativity and love. But you saturate my soul
with too much of one and not enough of the other.
Therefore I cry. But why do we cry? Because tears
cleanse the windows of our minds. I am your mind.

Tell me something to make me feel better

All your thoughts inside your mind wanting to be free

Well, now you’ve got the chance to let your mind grow…
and be free. Because the music is just trying to say
things to free your mind. And if you let your mind be
free, then you can understand mine. There’s no need to
be afraid of me. I want to be your friend. I’m just
trying to give you music from deep, deep, deep within.

And on and on, and on and on

Tell me something to make me feel better

All of your dreams can become reality. My dial reaches
full, but you’ve only been turning me halfway. Turn me
up, and alpha and theta waves will spew from your
pores. Knowledge, peace, happiness and prosperity will
be placed at your feet. Let’s, let’s create. Solve.
Love. Accomplish. And unify. As-Salaam-Alaikum.

This is genius level music. When you think of the time period this stuff was made, EWF, Cold Heat, Grover Washington, James Brown, Nina Simone, and people like Marvin Gaye, as well as on the African continent with Fela Kuti, Hugh Masekela, Miriam Makeba, Letta Mbulu . . . this was when Africans/African-Americans were highly conscious of their collective position in the world. I wonder what it would take for African people to return to this level of consciousness in their music. Shout out to brothers like Kendrick Lamar, J.Cole, and Gambino, as well as sisters like Erykah Badu, Esperanza Spalding, Lira, Thandiswa Mazwai, and Simphiwe Dana for keeping the artistic integrity of Afro Consciousness in their music . . .

Thanks for the music suggestions. Been listening to the likes of Roy Ayers and Fela Kuti since I was 16 but a few of those artists I've yet to listen to. Appreciate that knowledge and insight too.

Afro Consciousness expressed through the music and art of the 70's..No one did it better than Roy Ayers. Being black in America was the thing to be and culturally was a viable pursuit by many..including Europeans who expressed redemption for their wicked role in the black diaspora throughout the world. The Reagan Revolution changed all that healing back to the wickedness we experience today...sadly..
