Hey Good Lookin'
Roy Clark and Joe Pass Lyrics

Jump to: Overall Meaning ↴  Line by Line Meaning ↴

Say, hey, good lookin'
Whatcha got cookin'?
How's about cookin' somethin' up with me?
Hey, sweet baby
Don't you think maybe
We could find us a brand new recipe?

I got a hot-rod Ford and a two-dollar bill
And I know a spot right over the hill
There's soda pop and the dancin's free
So if you wanna have fun come along with me
Say, hey, good lookin'
Whatcha got cookin'?
How's about cookin' somethin' up with me?

I'm free and ready
So we can go steady
How's about savin' all your time for me?
No more lookin'
I know I've been tooken
How's about keepin' steady company?

I'm gonna throw my date-book over the fence
And find me one for five or ten cents
I'll keep it 'til it's covered with age
'Cause I'm writin' your name down on every page
Say, hey, good lookin'

Whatcha got cookin'?
How's about cookin' somethin' up with me?

Overall Meaning

The lyrics to "Hey Good Lookin'" by Roy Clark and Joe Pass may seem simple and straight forward, but they convey a playful and flirty tone. The song begins by addressing a potentially attractive person with the question "Whatcha got cookin'?" This could be interpreted literally as inquiring about what they are cooking or figuratively as asking what they have to offer or bring to the table. The next line suggests that perhaps they could cook something up together, indicating a desire to spend time with this person.

The chorus repeats the same question of what they have cooking and adds an invitation to have fun together. The second verse suggests that maybe they could take their relationship further and go steady. The singer is expressing a willingness to commit and save all their time for this person. The verse even goes so far as to suggest throwing away their datebook, indicating that they no longer need to search for other potential partners as they have found someone they are interested in pursuing.

Overall, the song is playful and flirty, with both the lyrics and melody encouraging a carefree and lighthearted atmosphere.

Joe unexpectedly takes the melody, then at 2:14 generously and so very quickly passes the ball over to Roy, who picks it up instantly. Amazing intuition and teamwork from both players.

Mr. Joe Pass so laid back, like he doesnt know he is the MAN. rip maestro. nobody can interpret a tune like he could. genius, pure & simple genius. thanks for this piece.

Another "country" musician who can blow you away is Glenn Campbell. On one of his shows he went toe-to-toe with George Benson and held his own. Blew me away.

@catboyzee

Respect and RIP to two of the original guitar shredders, Roy Clark and Joe Pass. Loving the tone of Roy's Heritage signature guitar BTW...

I was wondering who was the “The Third Man” !. Absolutely beautiful moving chords around the fretboard. A stellar contribution. A ghastly shame that he gets no mention.
Enabled Joe and Roy, to float along. A wonderful video, great stars all. Say no more, marvellous !, x x x .

@yardbirdsweet

John Pisano! A great jazz guitarist/accompanist with a ton of credits, but never really had a solo career that took off like Roy or Joe.
