California Blue
Roy Orbison Lyrics

Jump to: Overall Meaning ↴  Line by Line Meaning ↴

Working all day and the sun don't shine
Trying to get by and I'm just killing time
I feel the rain fall the whole night through
Far away from you, California blue

California blue dreaming all alone
Nothing else to do California blue
Every day I pray I'll be on my way
Saving love for you, California blue

One sunny day, I'll get back again
Somehow, someway but I don't know when
California blue, California blue

Living my life with you on my mind
Thinking of things that I left far behind
It's been so long doing all I can do
To get back to you, California blue

California blue (California blue) dreaming all alone (California blue)
Nothing else to do (California blue) California blue
Every day I pray I'll be on my way
Saving love for you, California blue

One sunny day I'll get back again
Somehow, someway but I don't know when
California blue, California blue

Still missing you, California blue

Still missing you, California blue
Still missing you, California blue

Overall Meaning

The lyrics of Roy Orbison's "California Blue" evoke the feeling of longing and homesickness. The singer of the song is a person who is working hard and trying to get by but is constantly reminded of their loved one who is far away in California. The song spans a wide range of emotions, from loneliness to hopefulness, and is infused with a sense of yearning that is palpable throughout.

The opening lines of the song - "Working all day and the sun don't shine, trying to get by and I'm just killing time" - set the tone for the rest of the song. The singer is busy with work, but there's a sense of aimlessness and emptiness to their existence without their beloved. The rain falling all night long underscores the feeling of loneliness and despair that the singer is experiencing.

The refrain of the song, "California blue, dreaming all alone, nothing else to do, California blue" reinforces the idea that the singer is consumed by thoughts of their loved one in California. They pray every day that they'll be reunited, and they're filled with hope that someday they'll be able to return to the place where they feel they truly belong.

Overall, "California Blue" is a moving tribute to the power of love and the emotional toll that separation can take. The song speaks to anyone who has ever been far from home, far from someone they care about, and longed for their return.

And the sun don't shine
Trying to get by
And I'm just killin' time
I feel the rain
Fall the whole night through
Far away from you

Dreaming all alone
Nothing else to do

I'll get back again
Somehow, someway

Doing all I can do
To get back to you

You know he was a great singer when Elvis made the comment Roy was the best singer ever

@AmericanActionReport

During the late 1980s, a fourteen-year-old boy reacted with surprise to learn that I knew who Roy Orbison was and even enjoyed this singer who was enjoyed by listeners his age. He was doubly surprised when I told him that Roy Orbison had been my favorite singer since the late 1950s. At that age, kids think the world began when they were born. Roy Orbison is still my all-time favorite singer.

@teratonexplosion

Back in '88 they had scheduled this song on the radio every morning ~8am in his memory. Me and my dad used to leave home 10 minutes early so we catch the song on the car radio on our way to the bakery, or sit in the car park and wait for the song to play then go. It really brings back some priceless memories for me.
