Coming Home
Roy Orbison Lyrics

Jump to: Overall Meaning ↴  Line by Line Meaning ↴

Listen all you people
Try and understand
You may be a soldier
Woman, child or man

But there won't be many coming home
No, there won't be many coming home
Oh, there won't be many
Maybe ten out of twenty
But there won't be many coming home

Now the old folks will remember
On that dark and dismal day
How their hearts were choked with pride
As their children marched away
Now the glory is all gone
They are left alone

And there won't be many coming home
No, there won't be many coming home
Oh, there won't be many
Maybe five out of twenty
But there won't be many coming home

Look real closely at the soldier
Coming at you through the haze
He may be the younger brother who ran away
And before you kill another
Listen to what I say

Oh, there won't be many coming home
Oh, there won't be many coming home
Oh, there won't be many
There may not be any
But there won't be many coming home

If they all came back but one
He was still some mother's son
And there won't be many coming home

Oh, there won't be many coming home

Oh, there won't be many coming home
Oh, there won't be many coming home

Overall Meaning

The lyrics to Roy Orbison's "Coming Home" speak to the feelings of a traveler who's been away from home for too long. He talks about the long and lonely road he's had to travel on his own, and how he's ready to put that behind him now that he's returning home. The opening line of the song "It's a long and lonely highway, when you're traveling all alone" sets the tone for what's to come. He's been running through the fire and for so long that he knows that if he took it any higher, he would still be gone. But now he's coming home and he can't wait to be there.

Throughout the song, he talks about how his home was really never on a far and distant shore. If he stayed away forever, he could never miss it more. He thinks back to all the years he's been gone and never even wondered why. He talks about all the nights he's been alone, never touching the ground. But now he's homeward bound and he's heard the thunder over Canaan and the angels cry. Their voices revealed to him that as he lives, so will he die. The song ends with him restating that he's coming home.

It's a sentiment that many people can relate to, and the song captures it perfectly. It's a testament to Roy Orbison's ability to write songs that are both deeply personal and widely accessible.
