Easy Way Out
Roy Orbison Lyrics

Jump to: Overall Meaning ↴  Line by Line Meaning ↴

Darlin' all you do is decieve.
Always a heartache up your sleeve
What good does it do to be hidin' the truth
(Hidin' Hidin')
The only one you really fool is you.

[Chorus]
Baby I'm teaking the easy way out
And I know that you know what I'm talking about
All these games that you play I can live without
I'm takin' the easy way out

Your misbehavin' is tto much to bear
You got me thinking that you just don't care
All of your lyin's so hard to believe
(Lyin' Lyin')
Why do you do these things to me.

[Chorus]

Startin' Tonight it's gonna be much better
It's gonna feel good to get you off my mind

[Chorus]

Overall Meaning

The lyrics to Roy Orbison's song "Easy Way Out" speak of a person who is tired of being deceived by their partner. The singer accuses the other of always hiding the truth and keeping a heartache up their sleeve. The singer then questions what good it does to hide the truth when the only person they're fooling is themselves. The chorus then speaks of the person taking the easy way out, and they know that their partner understands what they're talking about. The singer says they can live without all the games that their partner plays and takes the easy way out.

The second verse speaks of how the misbehavior of the partner is too much to bear, and the singer thinks that the other person just doesn't care. The singer accuses the partner of lying, and the lying is hard to believe. The singer questions why their partner does these things to them. The last verse indicates that the singer is going to make things much better starting tonight, and they will feel good to get their partner off their mind.

The song is about a failed and deceitful relationship, and the singer is cutting it off because they can't take the heartache that comes with the relationship. The singer acknowledges that the partner has been playing games and hiding the truth, causing them heartache. They, however, are taking the easy way out by leaving the relationship to prevent further hurt, indicating that it's the only way to resolve it.

Roy was about 42 here. Tough times for mid-career musicians of his and earlier generations.

Certainly. New music wasn’t boding well for Roy at this time. Disco was a hard era for cats like him. That said, money-wise, Roy did VERY well during this time. Many young acts were coming to prominence, all of which were big fans of Roy. Between his tour numbers and the royalties he raked in from others covering his songs, he did alright!

Daniel Burns

this song only went to #109 on the pop charts in 1979!!!

Chief Kurtz

Why couldn't he do this at the Black and White Night?
