In 1988, he joined the supergroup Traveling Wilburys with George Harrison, Bob Dylan, Tom Petty, and Jeff Lynne and also released a new solo album. He died of a heart attack in December that year, at the zenith of his resurgence. His life was marred by tragedy, including the death of his first wife and his two eldest sons in separate accidents. Orbison's vocal instrument bridged the gap between baritone and tenor, and music scholars have suggested that he had a three- or four-octave range.[1] The combination of Orbison's powerful, impassioned voice and complex musical arrangements led many critics to refer to his music as operatic, giving him the sobriquet "the Caruso of Rock".[2][note 1] Elvis Presley and Bono have stated his voice was, respectively, the greatest and most distinctive they had ever heard.[3] While most male performers in rock and roll in the 1950s and '60s projected a defiant masculinity, many of Orbison's songs instead conveyed a quiet, desperate vulnerability. He was known for performing while standing still and solitary and for wearing black clothes and dark sunglasses, which lent an air of mystery to his persona.
Orbison was initiated into the second class of the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame in 1987 by longtime admirer Bruce Springsteen. The same year he was inducted into the Nashville Songwriters Hall of Fame, and the Songwriters Hall of Fame two years later. Rolling Stone placed Orbison at number 37 on their list of The Greatest Artists of All Time, and number 13 on their list of The 100 Greatest Singers of All Time.[4] In 2002, Billboard magazine listed Orbison at number 74 in the Top 600 recording artists.[5]

In Dreams
Roy Orbison Lyrics
Jump to: Overall Meaning ↴ Line by Line Meaning ↴
Tiptoes to my room every night
Just to sprinkle star dust and to whisper
"Go to sleep, everything is alright"
I close my eyes then I drift away
Into the magic night, I softly say
A silent prayer like dreamers do
In dreams I walk with you
In dreams I talk to you
In dreams you're mine all of the time
We're together in dreams, in dreams
But just before the dawn
I awake and find you gone
I can't help it, I can't help it if I try
I remember that you said goodbye
Too bad it only seems
It only happens in my dreams
Only in dreams
In beautiful dreams
Roy Orbison's song In Dreams captures the essence of dreaming and longing for a loved one. In the song, he describes a candy-colored clown, also known as the sandman, who visits him every night to sprinkle stardust and whisper soothing words that help him fall asleep. Once he falls asleep, he feels like he is in a magical world where he can walk and talk with his loved one. The lyrics convey a feeling of joy, love, and harmony that he can only feel in his dreams.
As the night progresses, and just before dawn, he wakes up to find that his loved one is gone. His heart sinks as he realizes that he has to face another day without her. He remembers that she said goodbye, and he finds himself helplessly clinging to the hope that they will meet again in his dreams. The song poignantly captures the pain that comes with longing and the refuge that one finds in dreams.
Overall, the song In Dreams is a beautiful and timeless masterpiece that touches upon the universal human experience of love, loss, and dreaming. It takes us on a journey to the magical world of dreams where we can escape the harsh reality of life and connect with our deepest emotions and desires, even if it's only for a fleeting moment.
