Mean Little Mama
Roy Orbison Lyrics

Jump to: Overall Meaning ↴  Line by Line Meaning ↴

Well why do you treat me so mean
You're the meanest thing I've ever seen
You won't let a-me hold you tight
You won't let a-me love you right
But you know I love you
So why do you do me like you do
Say maybe little baby, I'm nervous as a bug
You got me crazy little baby, you know you tear me up
You're a mean little mama, ah-ah
Yeah a mean little mama, ah-ah
Well I'm down on my knees for you
Well I'm beggin' and a-pleadin'
Oh please-please love me too

Say maybe little baby, I'm nervous as a bug
You got me crazy little baby, you know you tear me up
You're a mean little mama, ah-ah
Yeah a mean little mama, ah-ah
Well I'm down on my knees for you
Well I'm beggin' and a-pleadin'
Oh please-please love me too
Well I'm beggin' and a-pleadin'
Oh please-please love me too

Well I'm beggin' and a-pleadin'
Oh please-please love me too

Overall Meaning

The lyrics of Roy Orbison's song "Mama" express the struggles of a man who is deeply in love with a woman who does not reciprocate his feelings in the same way. Often calling the woman a "mean little mama," the man pleads his case, wondering why he is being treated so poorly. He explains that he wants to hold her tight and love her right, but she won't let him. Despite her treatment of him, he still loves her.

The chorus, in which the man says "say maybe little baby, I'm nervous as a bug, you got me crazy little baby, you know you tear me up," conveys the emotions of someone who is infatuated and deeply consumed by their feelings of love. He is begging and pleading for her to love him in return and pleading on his knees for her to reconsider her position.

Overall, the song speaks to the universal struggles of unrequited love and the pain and frustration that can come from it. Despite the negative treatment, scarcity of love or hope of reciprocation, the man continues to plead and give his all for this woman.
