My Prayer
Roy Orbison Lyrics

Jump to: Overall Meaning ↴  Line by Line Meaning ↴

When the twilight is gone and no songbirds are singing
When the twilight is gone you come into my heart
And here in my heart you will stay while I pray

My prayer is to linger with you
At the end of the day in a dream that's divine
My prayer is a rapture in blue
With the world far away and your lips close to mine

Tonight while our hearts are aglow
Oh tell me the words that I'm longing to know

My prayer and the answer you give

May they still be the same for as long as we live
That you'll always be there at the end of my prayer

Overall Meaning

The lyrics of Roy Orbison's song "My Prayer" express the deep longing of a lover eager to stay close to his beloved, even in the darkness when the world seems to have gone silent. The song begins with the melancholic image of twilight, when the birds stop singing, and everything becomes quiet. It is at this moment that the lover cries out to his beloved, who has come into his heart. From here, the song becomes a prayer of sorts, with the lover expressing his wish to stay close to his beloved forever.

The first stanza captures the melancholic setting in which the lover longs to be close to his beloved. The second stanza reveals the lover's deepest wish: to dream of a life with his beloved that is full of joy and delight. The third stanza is the climax of the song, with the lover pleading with his beloved to stay with him forever, answering his prayer and keeping their love alive for as long as they shall live.

In essence, "My Prayer" is a song about the power of love and the deep need we all have for connection and belonging. It speaks to the human desire for intimacy and the hope for everlasting love.

Holly shit ! This is the first time I’m hearing Roy do this song, previously adored the platters and the ink spots version, and always an Orbison fan, this version literally made the hairs on my neck stand straight up, a chill go down my spine, a lump in my throat and my eyes welling up with tears involuntarily .... that music can affect my nervous system so profoundly is incredible
