Rockhouse
Roy Orbison Lyrics

Jump to: Overall Meaning ↴  Line by Line Meaning ↴

Blue light, big crowd
Jukebox plays loud
No fear, no care
Everybody's rockin' everywhere

Rockhouse, rockhouse, rockhouse
We're goin' to the rockhouse
Well rock it in the mornin'
Rock it in daylight

Rockin' through the evening
And I won't be home at night
Rockhouse, we're goin' to the rockhouse
Rock-a-rockhouse

Heartache, you lose
No trouble, no booze
Come one, come all
Well rock it up and have a ball

Rockhouse, rockhouse, rockhouse
We're goin' to the rockhouse

Overall Meaning

Roy Orbison's song "Rockhouse" is a joyful anthem of unbridled abandon and reckless fun. It begins at a vibrant juke joint, where a big crowd congregates, with the blue light creating an atmosphere for groove and the jukebox blaring out loud music. The song's protagonist has no worries or fear as he sees everyone rocking to the rhythm, and he too joins in. The chorus takes a life of its own as Orbison sings, "Rockhouse, rockhouse, rockhouse, we're goin' to the rockhouse, well rock it in the mornin', rock it in daylight, rockin' through the evening, and I won't be home at night," with such enthusiasm, that it captures the essence of what it means to have fun in a communal setting.

Sun records rule forever!!

@JohnLeePedimore

One of my favorite Orbison tunes.
It was originally written by Harold Jenkins(Conway Twitty).Twitty and Orbison re-wrote the song for the this Sun Studio session even though the writing credits read Orbison-Philips(Sam).

@wmwillis3

via Conway's (former) sax man, Martin Willis :-)
The salve was the co-writing credits.
