The Comedians
Roy Orbison Lyrics

Jump to: Overall Meaning ↴  Line by Line Meaning ↴

I fell under such gentle persuasion
You can't refuse it's like a home from home
Meanwhile in the Motor car kingdom
They're finding that all that glitters is not chrome
The social circle have these cardiac complaints
Their hearts are empty when their hands are full
All these new found fond acquaintances
Turn out to be the red rag to my bull
[Chorus ]
And I'm up while the dawn is breaking
Even though my heart is aching
I should be drinking a toast to absent friends
Instead of these comedians
I've looked into these eyes upon reflection
They've seen the face of love, they've seen a few
What kind of love is this upon inspection

You'll be the last to know who's fooling who
Chorus

Overall Meaning

In Roy Orbison's song The Comedians, he sings about the false and empty nature of the world of show business and fake friendships. The lyrics speak of how he fell under the gentle persuasion of this world, finding it difficult to refuse, as it seemed like a home away from home. However, the song highlights the contrast between this world of glamour and the harsh reality of it. The shining and glittering world of the Motor car kingdom, a metaphorical reference to the entertainment industry, does not have substantial backing behind it.

Roy Orbison notes that even the social circle in this world are grappling with cardiac complaints despite having full hands, revealing the empty and unfulfilling nature of their existences. To make matters worse, these new-found friends who were initially fond acquaintances are revealed to be the red rag to his bull, perhaps indicating the betrayal that follows him in this world. The chorus implies how despite all this, he's up while the dawn is breaking, fighting against the heartache that he's feeling. He should be drinking a toast to absent friends, but instead, he's surrounded by so-called comedians whose act seems to be a charade, perhaps an indication of the empty facade that the entertainment industry presents.

The following lines talk about Roy Orbison having looked into these people's eyes upon reflection, with them seeing the face of love, but they've seen it a few times before. Perhaps, they are now disillusioned, recognizing the hollowness of what they once saw as love, and now they're just fooling themselves. The line "You'll be the last to know who's fooling who" highlights the idea that in this world of pretense, it's difficult to distinguish between genuine and fake.

Maybe the fact I'm not being born in any English spoken county could affect my text interpretation, but I don't think that he had intentions to minimize Roy's magnitude.

Indeed I thought the opposite, that was a way to honor him.

This concert was the last that Roy played and he is whom that invite those boys and girls.

KD Lang had a privilege to got a
little kiss for him.

Every one in that event was honored to be a part of his wonderful moment.

I barely can watch and hear the songs without tears starting from my eyes. 😢💞

Roy is and will be forever in my mind and also my heart.

Greetings from Brazil, guys! 🤩

That orbison....
What the hell???
Was that supposed to be funny?
Sad love, to you Roy.
Perhaps!!!!
IMHO, the hangers on were no one's that could only dream of being Roy.
Bruce springstone and the others.
No real talent.
Just hangers on.
Perhaps Roy, perhaps.
You were so gracious to allow this.
Only once in a lifetime.
Live life through the heart.
The comedians still rule over the ignorant masses.
Thx for posting this.

Roy Orbison had such a beautiful powerful voice!! He left us much to soon, RIP my friend 🙂

Roy had no powerful voice at all, the sound was more in his throat than his mouth. The new vocal master Kudaibergen or Pavarotti have/had power, Roy "only" had a wide range.

How can anyone give this a thumbs down? I personally love it. Roys Performance, The Orchestration, and Composition are a work of art.
