The Crowd
Roy Orbison Lyrics

Jump to: Overall Meaning ↴  Line by Line Meaning ↴

I go out with the crowd, I play the game
Pretending out loud but it don't seem the same
For the heart of the crowd is gone from sight
My part of the crowd is not with me tonight

I remember the prom, every dance with you
All the crazy things that we used to do
Sometimes we'd wait for a chance
And then we'd steal away
From the crowd and the dance to our hideaway

Aww, but you're gone and it's not the same old game
I fall apart each time I hear your name
Guess I'll go along with the crowd, I'll make believe

That you'll come back to me, run back to me
Hurry back to the crowd a-and me.

Overall Meaning

Roy Orbison's The Crowd is a powerfully poignant song about moving on and trying to fit in with the masses after the heartbreak of losing someone dear. The title itself represents the public's perception of individuals, i.e. their place amongst the 'crowd'. The song starts with Orbison stating that he goes out with the crowd and plays the game of pretending to be okay, but everything seems insincere and false when the person they used to be with is no longer around. The heart of the crowd that gave life to every event seems to have vanished, and the connection that things had with the person who he was with has gone too.

Orbison takes the listeners back to their earlier days, a time when he had shared beautiful memories with the person he had lost. They danced to music, had crazy fun, and stole away from the noisy crowd to their hideaway. But now everything has changed; he is alone, the name of the person he's lost only brings pain and makes him fall apart. He decided to go along with the crowd and pretend that everything is just as it was. He hopes that maybe just this once, they will come back to him, that maybe the crowd will come back to him.

The powerful lyrics of The Crowd has touched millions of people, as it speaks to the heart of anyone who has experienced the pain of loss. The emotional hold the song has on its listeners has made it an all-time favourite across generations. Moreover, the song is known to have been written with the group called The Everly Brothers in mind, explaining the deep harmonies and overall sound of the song. It's even featured as a song in the 1990s film, Only the Lonely.
