The name “Royce” came from his R shaped Turkish link chain which was said to have resembled a Rolls Royce logo. During high school Royce was one of the shortest players on his basketball team, standing 5′9” at age 18.
Royce signed with Tommy Boy records in 1998 and later was slated to release his debut album Rock City. Though this relationship was premature, Royce ended up leaving the label citing creative differences.
Royce began working with well known Game Recordings who helped get him in front of the right people to negotiate a deal with Columbia Records. Royce’s Rock City debut was yet again plagued with delays, during which the album was heavily bootlegged. Though not in their favor, Columbia chose to release Rock City in limited quantity and quickly went out of print by the time Royce left Columbia.
Around this time Royce dropped the underground banger “Boom” with production by Dj Premier. Soon thereafter he joined up with Koch / Game Recordings and released Rock City (Version 2.0) independently.
Most well known for his association with Slim Shady – the two met at a concert while Slim was promoting his Slim Shady EP. The two formed a Duo called Bad Meets Evil, releasing a number of tracks including “Renegades” [Original Version], “Nuttin’ to Do”, “Scary Movies”, “She’s the One”, and “See You In Hell”, which appeared on Eminem’s album The Slim Shady LP, titled “Bad Meets Evil”.
In 2001 Royce was set to work with Dr Dre’s Chronic 2000 project as a ghostwriter. He contributed tracks including “The Message”, “The Throne Is Mine”, “Stay In Your Place” and the original version of “Xxplosive” titled “The Way I Be Pimpin’”.
Royce’s association with Dr. Dre ceased when his manager, Kino Childrey spoke to a reporter about Eminem and Dre in the studio. Royce refused to dismiss his manager and long time friend, ending his relationship with Dre.
Royce and Em had a mutual friendship with Proof. Though Royce had bad blood with D12 member, Bizarre, stemming from a earlier freestyle battle with Royce’s brother. Misscommunication escalated the beef between the pair, causing it to spiral out of control and include all members of the rap group D12.
In 2002, Royce called Eminem to request to be signed to Shady Records. Eminem declined and soon thereafter signed 50-cent to Shady Records instead.
Royce released several diss tracks including “Shit on U” (over D12’s “Shit on You”), taking shots at Bizzare of D12. Royce continued record dis tracks including “We Ridin’”, “Death Day”, and “Malcolm X”. There’s speculation that Royce and Em often wrote bars dissing each other subliminally.
From 2002-2003 Royce kept a low profile releasing releasing Build & Destroy, and Build & Destroy: The Lost Sessions Part 1 across the mixtape circuit.
In 2003, Royce’s beef with D12 finally reached its tipping point. Royce and Proof and their entourages spilled into the streets of Detroit arguing but the issue dissipated once firearms were drawn. The two rappers spent a night in jail, and settled their beef.
In 2004 Royce released his sophomore effort Death Is Certain on Koch records, as well as two mixtapes from his crew M.I.C. (Make it Count). The crew includes members Royce, Kid Vishis, and June.
2005 marked Royce’s third full length album release Independent’s Day on Trouble/M.I.C. Records.
Royce Da 5′9″ was sentenced to jail on September 19, 2006 for parole violation for a prior DUI charge. Royce was sentenced to one year in the clink at Oakland County Jail, Pontiac, Michigan. On January 9, 2007, Royce got out of jail on work-release.
Royce has a strong ghostwriting resume including the track “Tell Me” ft. Christina Aguilera for Diddy’s album Press Play.
In May 2007, Royce Da 5′9″ released a mixtape called The Bar Exam which features DJ Premier and Statik Selektah on the Wheels of Steel.
In 2008, Royce confirmed that he had officially resolved his longstanding differences with Eminem and celebrated with a reunion concert on July 12, 2008 at Saint Andrews Hall. A mixtape of the reunion concert was soon released thereafter.
Royce also had beef with other industry majors including Mistah Fab, Cashi$, and Joe Budden, Kanye West and the Ruff Ryders.

Aiyyo Royce Da 5'9"
Why you wan' share your food with these niggaz?
We don't share food in the recession
Bite these niggaz like you bite the microphone
[Royce Da 5'9"]
Livin legend inside of a Smith & Wesson slidin out of the barrel
Police cars with they sirens combined when I'm rhymin
Sayin they got a call that somebody 'round here done fired SHOTS!
Mac-11's in order, the flow is like water
Each quote's a quarter of blow, the chorus is followed by the DOT!
Goons, goblins and creatures and monsters are bouncin
And beat ya and stomp ya and eat ya, don't get swallowed by the BLOCK!
I pay a shrink every week to basically tell me
"Lay here and speak to me" just to say how psychotic I am NOT!
I'm too fly with the viral and physical copies, niggaz sloppy
Look up what you under, I'm what you tryin to TOP!
I'm scared and compared to no man, I'm like the big hand on Big Ben
I get in and I'm hittin my numbers 'round the CLOCK!
I'm 'bout to give it back to my nigga Busta Bust and have a seat
It's convenient I'm already coppin a SQUAT! {*echoes*}
[Interlude: Busta Rhymes]
Nowadays when niggaz walk around
They start to look like hamburgers and frankfurters
Aiyyo Royce Da 5'9"
Feed on these motherfuckers homie, c'mon!
[Royce Da 5'9"]
Take him, gut him and take out his organs and smorgasbord him
The more important he is I'm toe-taggin his BEAT!
Turn him to chicken chowder, dip him in some sniffin powder
Season him with gasoline and THROW his ass in the CREASE!
Mention my name in a record I'ma come get you lyrically
Individually I'ma take it back to the STREETS!
Cannibalistic mentality, rappers hatin, decapitate him
Rap 'bout what I naturally happen to BE!
Flow is superb and you heard us forget it, two verses
Two murders acquitted, personally it's a wrap, CAPICHE?
Fingers snappin and tappin they feet, clappin what happened the street
'Bout to happily bring it back to the D!
Niggaz claimin harder that all of this time
Niggaz believe him until I see him and then slap him and SEE!
I ain't havin it, havoc is average to me
War's normal, only thing I'm havin is havin a FEAST! {*echoes*}
[Interlude: Busta Rhymes]
Royce Da 5'9", you my dawg and I'm yo' dawg
Bein that I already sic'ed you on these motherfuckers
It's yo' turn to sic me on they ass
Let's go!
[Busta Rhymes]
Every time that I marry the rhyme and the beat
I go hairy and grind in the street then I'm fuckin up E'RYBODY
Mobilizin shit like we gorillas and peelin your skin
Like we banana peelers, it's hazardous if you copy
Don't you know that I'm one of the coldest courageous, the boldest contagious
Ain't no one can phase this thing that I do
Well you know since I report the latest that niggaz can't fuck with me
Cause I'm the greatest, my shit is sick like the FLU
You see I'm animalistic, the cataclysmic events
That'll happen whenever I grab the mic and talk
Indeed them bag us specifically that I'm hickory dickory dock
Of this rizzy, the diddy bop in my walk
Now I'm the messenger to set the temperature nigga
Whenever the heat will be needed to hot the block up, I'm sayin
I got the dillinger, Harry Kissinger with the ratchet
The fact is I'm back with the clack and the click, see I ain't playin!
[Outro: Busta Rhymes]
{*laughs*} Why oh why oh WHY!
Royce Da 5'9" please tell me why!
Why the fuck these niggaz gon' let us get together and do this shit to 'em
It's so fuckin unfair!
Shit is so unfair! {*chuckles*}
The song "Dinner Time" by Royce da 5'9" featuring Busta Rhymes is a braggadocious, menacing track that features the two rappers boasting about their lyrical skills and their willingness to take out any competition. In the intro, Busta Rhymes questions why Royce would be willing to share his food with anyone in the current recession, but then tells him to "bite these n***as like you bite the microphone." From there, Royce delivers a series of violent and aggressive lines, referencing guns, police sirens, and cannibalism, all backed by a hard-hitting beat. Busta comes in for the second verse, delivering his own intense flow, boasting that he's "one of the coldest courageous, the boldest contagious."
Overall, the song is an exercise in lyrical braggadocio, with both rappers taking turns delivering impressive bars over a hard-hitting beat. The track is marked by violent, aggressive imagery and a general sense of menace that is characteristic of much of Royce and Busta's work.
