The debut album from Rubens, 'Carnivalesque' is out now on Herb Recordings, and can be purchased from the likes of Boomkat, Piccadilly Records, Rough Trade and good local independents. A limited edition 7" double-A promo single(Puggies/Vertical Hold)and a 12" remix ep (Breaking Into Smile - feat. remixes by The Black Dog, Dextro and Kirk Degiorgio)are also available from the same outlets.
Aside from original material, Rubens have also turned their hand to some remix and collaboration projects with some well received results including work with fellow Scottish electronic artists Dextro (Jumblefunk/Border Community/16K Records), Mosca (Retropublik/Herb Recordings) and similarly melodic flavoured collabs with South London's New City 16 (Retropublik).
With a live set (with a live drummer and guitarist involved), the Rubens workshop has taken to the stage at various gigs around Glasgow, with plans for more in the near future. Stay tuned here for more noises along these lines...

The lyrics to Rubens' song "Lay it Down" speak of a narrator who has been wronged by someone and is finally ready to confront them. The singer starts off by stating that they don't mind speaking their mind and laying the blame where it lies. They have been searching for the person who made them feel a certain way and are not happy with where it has led them. The repetition of the phrase 'cause it's you' emphasises that the person they are referring to is the one they are speaking to directly.
The singer then tells the person that they didn't think they would end up telling the truth to them but they have to lay them down (or call them out on their behavior). They also state that no one gets to push them around. This firm stance on their own boundaries and morals is a strong message and shows the singer's determination to be treated with respect.
The overall message of the song is one of standing up for oneself and not letting others take advantage. The lyrics may also speak to the process of healing from a toxic relationship where the singer is finally taking responsibility for their own wellbeing and putting an end to negative behavior from another person.
