Ain't Misbehavin'
Ruby Braff And His Buddies Lyrics

Jump to: Overall Meaning ↴  Line by Line Meaning ↴

No one to talk with
All by myself
No one to walk with
But I'm happy on the shelf
Ain't misbehavin'
I'm savin' my love for you

I know for certain
The one I love
I'm through with flirtin'
It's just you I'm thinkin' of
Ain't misbehavin'
I'm savin' my love for you

Like Jack Horner
In the corner
Don't go nowhere
What do I care?
Your kisses are worth waitin' for
Believe me

I don't stay out late
Don't care to go
I'm home about eight
Just me and my radio
Ain't misbehavin'
I'm savin' my love for you

Like Jack Horner
In the corner
Don't go nowhere
What do I care?
Your kisses are worth waitin' for
Believe me

I don't stay out late
Don't care to go
I'm home about eight
Just me and my radio

Ain't misbehavin'
I'm savin' my love for you

Overall Meaning

The lyrics of "Ain't Misbehavin'" by Ruby Braff and His Buddies describe a contented individual who is alone but not lonely. The first verse illustrates the singer's solitude, his lack of company to talk, and walk with. Despite this, he indicates contentment remaining on the "shelf," which implies that he's happy being alone. The chorus tells us that the singer is "ain't misbehaving" because he's saving all his love for a specific person. At this point, we don't know who this person is, but we can tell that they are important to the singer.

The second verse, however, brings some clarification to the song. The singer tells us that he is determined to save his love for only one person, i.e., the one he loves. The last phrase of this verse says, "It's just you I'm thinking of," confirming that the love he's saving is for someone he loves. The verse continues with the repetition of the chorus, implying the singer's commitment to honor that intended recipient by being faithful and staying away from illegal antics.

In the third verse, the singer continues to illustrate his happiness being alone. He compares himself to Jack Horner, who was content sitting in a corner. For the singer, the important thing is waiting because the eventual kiss from his beloved is worth it in the long run. He then continues to tell us further about his routine which consists of being home about eight o'clock and having the radio as the only company. He reiterates that he is "ain't misbehaving" and stays faithful to his promise by saving all his love for the person he loves.
