Brightside
Ruess Nate Lyrics

Jump to: Overall Meaning ↴

Why'd you take the long way home?
I watched you walk slow past my window
Is that what you did it for?
I think it's best you left me alone
You know I'm bound to make you cry
From up here I can see the Carlyle
I can see the Louvre shining in your eyes
I never meant to set the world on fire
Just wanted something you'd remember me by

But now I wish that I was on the bright side
These friends of mine could spend the whole night dreaming
While you're holding me tight under the moonlight
Just you and I, we'll lead a new life singing
La la la

You know, I think it says a lot
That I could wake myself up from this dream
Grab the things that are most dear to me
And although I could have loved you better
I had to get the fuck out of the bed
Cause there's just something about you my love
Something in the way you comb your hair
And fall apart at the seams
When you were young I used to throw you down
You'd show me how it feels to feel

Oh God, I wish that I was on the bright side
These friends of mine could spend the whole night dreaming
While you're holding me tight under the moonlight
Just you and me, babe, we'll spend our whole lives singing
La la la

And look at you

Overall Meaning

now, you're something else
With your head all fixed and your shirt half tucked
You made me this way, I knew it
You made me give a damn about something other than myself
And now I've got my heart out on my sleeve
I'm feeling like I'm in too deep
But you know that I wouldn't have it any other way

In "Brightside," Nate Ruess reflects on a difficult breakup, expressing a mix of regret, nostalgia, and longing for what could have been. He watches his former partner walking past his window, wondering if there was a reason for their long route home. Ruess knows that he's not the easiest person to be with and that he's hurt this person in the past, but he can't help feeling drawn to them nonetheless. He paints a picture of what could have been if they were still together, dreaming of a new life full of love and laughter.

Despite the pain and regret, Ruess concludes that he wouldn't have it any other way. The relationship may have been difficult, but it was also meaningful and transformative. This bittersweet mixture of emotions is captured beautifully in the song's catchy chorus, where Ruess wishes he could be on "the bright side" with his former partner, spending their whole lives singing together.

This song is truly beautiful, even made me tear a bit ;) The way I see it, the speaker is either regretful, looking back on his life or is dead, wishing with he could undo his actions or be alive with his beloved. Amazing work as always Nate.

VeteranPendragon Nate wrote this as if he were dead.
