Ruff Ryders' founders were initially famous for managing rapper DMX, who became a multi-platinum star for Def Jam Records in the late-1990s. After DMX's success, the management company started its own label imprint through Interscope Records, and had success with releases from female rapper Eve, former Bad Boy Records group The LOX (consisting of its main rapper Jadakiss), Drag-On, and newcomer Jin, winner of BET's "106 & Park" freestyle MC battle competition. The Deans' nephew Swizz Beatz is the main producer for most of the acts on the roster.

The beginning of "Friend of Mine" is a conversation between DMX and another person who warns him that another PK (P. Killer) joint is coming. It is suggested that this PK joint may refer to trouble caused by someone DMX knows by the name of P. Killer. DMX's response shows that he is tired of the constant drama surrounding P. Killer and is ready to confront him.
The rest of the song features DMX rapping about his experiences growing up in the streets, how he had to learn to survive and the importance of being true to oneself. He warns others that the more dirt they do, the more they will get, and that they should treat others as they would like to be treated. He also warns that those who do wrong will eventually get caught, no matter how much they try to cover their tracks. The end of the song features a warning to those who would cause trouble, saying that they will end up six feet deep.
Overall, "Friend of Mine" is a cautionary tale about the consequences of living a life of crime and the importance of being true to oneself, no matter what others may think.
