Rufio released their debut recording in 2001 on The Militia Group label, Perhaps, I Suppose. The band returned in June 2003 with MCMLXXXV (released on the Nitro label), which was recorded with the aid of producer Nick Rasculinecz who has also recorded with Foo Fighters and Rancid. Rufio went on to play on the Warped Tour that summer following the release of their second album. Their third album The Comfort of Home was released in July 2005. Again, the band went on to join tour that fall with MxPx and Relient K after the "The Comfort of Home" release.
In late January, 2006 bassist Jon Berry and drummer Mike Jimenez left the ban due to creative differences. Following the loss of these two members the band pulled out of their tour with No Use For A Name in early 2006. While no official statement had then been made regarding a breakup, in a 2006 interview, No Use for a Name acknowledged as much.
On Thursday 5th April 2007 the band announced on their MySpace page that they were to have an official farewell show on June 1st 2007 at The Glass House, Pomona CA followed by a South American tour. The statement in full reads: "Farewell show and South American tour. well... its been a while friends... and we've finally decided that its time to do an official farewell show with all the members of Rufio on June 1st. We thought it would be a good way to show our appreciation to all our hometown friends and fans who have supported us from the very beginning. Released through The Militia Group, the tracks include "All That Lasts," and "The Loneliest." The other tracks are acoustic versions of the previous two songs. New members of Rufio include Taylor Albaugh (bass) and Terry Stirling (drums).
On July 27, 2010, Rufio released their 4th album, Anybody Out There. This was followed by worldwide touring. In October 2010, Clark Domae announced that he was leaving the band to pursue other projects. In April 2011, Terry Stirling Jr. left Rufio to pursue other endeavors.

Is there a reason why our children bleed
So much to offer then you had to leave
These silent nights our deafening
Where are words that comfort?
When you try to find, try to find where to find it
Forever you'll be with us
If lighting a candle means calling on memories
I'd burn down the forest just to hear you speak
Some days are better and others I'm on my knees
Made you listen to grace with speed
Where are words that comfort?
When you try to find, try to find where to find it
Forever you'll be with us
I'll never say goodbye, say goodbye, say goodbye
So many questions never leave
And where are the answers that we seek?
Why do our children bleed?
Our questions aren't answered again
Our questions aren't answered again
Oh yeah yeah yeah
If lighting a candle means calling on memories
I'd burn down the forest just to hear you speak
Where are words that comfort?
When you try to find, try to find where to find it
Forever you'll be with us
I'll never say goodbye, say goodbye, say goodbye
Never say goodbye, say goodbye, say goodbye
The lyrics of "Drowning" by Rufio are an exploration of grief and loss. The singer is searching for answers that they know will never come – the reason why children must suffer and why loved ones have to leave. The silence of the night is overwhelming and deafening, emphasizing the enormity of the pain that the singer is experiencing. Even the words that are supposed to offer comfort seem to be elusive and difficult to find. The singer longs for some sense of closure or resolution, but it seems as though their questions will never be answered.
The use of imagery in the song is particularly powerful. The line "If lighting a candle means calling on memories, I'd burn down the forest just to hear you speak" is a beautiful and poignant expression of the singer's desire to keep the memory of their loved one alive. The forest represents an immense and tangible symbol of life, but it is nothing compared to the memory of the person they have lost. The reference to "grace with speed" is also intriguing – it suggests that the person who has died had a sense of urgency, that they had something important to accomplish before they passed away.
Overall, "Drowning" is a deeply emotional song that explores themes of grief, loss, and the search for meaning in the face of tragedy. It is a tribute to the powerful connection between memory and love, and a reminder that even in the depths of despair, we can find hope in the memories of those we have lost.
