You Got The Love
Rufus Lyrics

Jump to: Overall Meaning ↴  Line by Line Meaning ↴

Love me right
What's the matter with you
Hold me tight
Why must I tell you what to do
Smilin', smilin'
Comes as no surprise
Smilin' ain't hidin'
What I see in your eyes
The story goes much deeper
Than the eye can see yes it do
Stop runnin' a game
I can tell you're avoiding me, oh

Oh, ain't nothin'
I wouldn't pay
Just to hear, hear you say
I love you
I need you

Love me right
What's the matter with you
Hold me tight
Why must I tell you what to do
Smilin', smilin'
Comes as no surprise
Smilin' ain't hidin'
What I see in your eyes

You got the love
Gimme the strength
To keep on livin', yeah
Whatever it is
I can't do without what cha givin', hmm, hmm

Ain't nothin'
I wouldn't pay
Oh, just to hear, just hear you say, hmm
I love you,
I need you

You got the love
To gimme the strength
To keep on livin' yeah
Whatever it is
I can't do without
What cha givin', hmm, hmm

You got the love
To gimme the strength
To keep on livin' yeah
Whatever it is
I can't do without
What cha givin', no, no

You got the love

To gimme the strength
To keep on livin' yeah

Overall Meaning

The lyrics to Rufus and Chaka Khan's song "You Got The Love" are about a love that is not being reciprocated in a way that feels fulfilling. The singer of the song is telling their partner to love them right and to stop avoiding them. The chorus of the song talks about how the love that their partner is giving them is what is giving them the strength to keep on living. The singer is saying that whatever it is that their partner is giving them, they can't do without it.

The verses of the song are quite straightforward in their meaning. The singer is asking their partner to hold them tight and to love them the way that they want to be loved. They are also saying that they can see what their partner is hiding behind their smile. They are aware that there is something deeper going on in the relationship that they need to address. However, they are also acknowledging that the love that their partner is giving them is important to them and is what is keeping them going.

The chorus of the song is the real heart of the piece. The singer is expressing how much they need the love that their partner is giving them. They are saying that they can't do without it, and that it is what gives them the strength to keep on living. This is a very powerful statement about the importance of love, and about how it can help us to get through difficult times.

Overall, "You Got The Love" is a song about the power of love to sustain us, even in difficult times. It is also about the importance of being loved in the way that we need to be loved, and about the struggles that can come with trying to make a relationship work.

@BrunoandAnthony

One of the sickest bass/guitar riffs ever. Chaka Khan put the exclamation point on the sentence.

Chaka Khan used to live up the block from me on 78th & Carpenter in Chicago, she is TRULY one of the all-time great female artists on the planet, she can take any song and make it hers, one of my favorites is a song called Eternity written by Prince, I dig everything she does especially You got the Love, Stop on By, and Soul Talking, but most of all, Through The Fire!

@jamie4084

Jodi Watley was 2 blocks north of 85th and Essex, where I lived...she was just a member of a band, rehearsing
