The band signed a record deal with Profile Records in 1983, and Run's older brother, Russell "Rush" Simmons, signed Run-D.M.C. to his newly formed management company Rush Productions that same year. On their first major United States tour, the group set new fads by performing dressed in baggy black clothing, Adidas Sneakers (always with shoelaces removed), and Fedora hats.
Their mainstream success continued as the group performed at the famous Live Aid concert in 1985, and their 1986 album ''Raising Hell'' became the highest-selling rap album in history (this record was later broken as rap gained more popularity with artists like Notorious B.I.G. and Eminem), reaching number 3 on the ''Billboard magazine'' album charts and selling over 3 million copies. The album featured the famous cover version of Aerosmith's "Walk This Way", a rap-rock collaboration performed with Aerosmith members Steven Tyler and Joe Perry. The song was the first hip-hop track to make the Top 10 on Billboard's singles charts.
Run-D.M.C. were renowned for breaking new ground in rap music. "It's Like That" and "Sucker MC's" (1983) were the first hip hop tracks that relied on electronic beats and nothing else. "Peter Piper" (1986) was the first rap record in which the DJ cut up a record (in this case, "Take Me to the Mardi Gras" by jazz musician Bob James. Run-D.M.C. became the first rap act with a platinum album and multi-platinum album, as well as the first rappers to appear on the cover of ''Rolling Stone'' magazine, to receive a Grammy nomination and to appear on Saturday Night Live] and American Bandstand.
After a period of lackluster commercial success after the ''Raising Hell'' album, the group made a comeback in 1993 with their album ''Down With the King'', which made Billboard's Top 10 for album and the Pete Rock assisted single "Down With the King".
Jam-Master Jay was shot and killed in October 2002, leading Run-D.M.C. to announce their retirement.

Run's House
Run-D.M.C. Lyrics
Jump to: Overall Meaning ↴ Line by Line Meaning ↴
But I want y'all to know one thing-this is....
And when I say who's house, y'all know what time it is.
Who's house?
Runs house!
Ah, once again my friend
Not a trend for then
But never had this band
Till the ruler came
With a cooler name
Make ya dance and prance and draw the fans to stage
Name is Run my son
Number one for fun
Not a gun that's done and get done by none
The others act in fact ya just wack I kill
why?
because its fun my son and Run heads the bill!
Who's house?
Run's house!
Who's house?
Run's house!
I'm in the house y'all
I'm in the house y'all
And this is how Run DMC will turn it out y'all
I'm in the house y'all
I'm in the house y'all
And this is what Run DMC be about y'all
Will my name is DMC,
The all-time great
I buts the most rhymes in New York state
Reporters claw
Producers die
They want to be down with the king!
The wanted man from the wanted clan
Wanted by every fan from across the land
Not a G.A.N.G from off the street
R. and U.N. D.M.C complete!
Who's house?
Run's house!
get on the mic and (emcee)
Another time I take
For the rhyme I make
Make me mad and sad because the fad is fake
See I do this thing so come pressure this king
One mind I rhyme so all you just break
Cus I'm the best I'm def
Ask the rest they left
That's my name my game and we don't need the rep
So keep the booze you loose and suckas cool your mouth
I set a trap for rap that's crap
Its Run's house!
Who's house?
Run's house!
Some underestimate
And miscalculate
My intent to create what I call the great
Till I make a song that I prove em wrong
See my song so strong it'll make 'em come along
Come in the door
Get on the floor
Hard rock hard hitting hip hop hard-core
Causing casualties and catastrophes
And tragedies for the suck emcees
Use a strategy to get the best of me
You dirty rat emcees
Whoever you may be
You need to go down south
You need to shut your mouth
Its all about no doubt just shout cus we turn it out!
Who's house?
Run's house!
The song "Run's House" by Run-D.M.C has a powerful and energetic vibe that exudes confidence and dominance. The first few lines of the song, "A whole lot of superstars, on this stage here tonight/ But I want y'all to know one thing—this is... my house," immediately set the tone for the rest of the track. The song is essentially a celebration of the group's dominance in the genre of rap music during the 1980s. The chorus chants, "Who's house? Run's house!" which cements their claim to being the best of the best in the rap game.
The verses are rap solos from the individual members of Run-D.M.C. In the first verse, Run brags about his skills as an emcee, claiming that he's "number one for fun" and "not a gun that's done and get done by none." He then reveals his true motivation for being such a great rapper: "because it's fun my son and Run heads the bill!" This line speaks to the group's love for hip-hop music and the sheer joy they feel when they perform.
