Early
Run the Jewels feat. Boots Lyrics

Jump to: Overall Meaning ↴  Line by Line Meaning ↴

It be feelin' like the life that I'm livin', man, I don't control
Like every day I'm in a fight for my soul
Could it be that my medicine's the evidence
For pigs to stop and frisk me when they rollin' round on patrol?
And ask "Why you're here?" I just tell 'em 'cause it is what it is
I live here and that's what it is
He chimed "You got a dime?
I said "Man, I'm tryin' to smoke and chill
Please don't lock me up in front of my kids
And in front of my wife, man, I ain't got a gun or a knife
You do this and you ruin my life
And I apologize if it seems like I got out of line, sir
'Cause I respect the badge and the gun
And I pray today ain't the day that you drag me away
Right in front of my beautiful son"
And he still put my hands in cuffs, put me in the truck
When my woman screamed, said "Shut up"
Witness with the camera phone on
Saw the copper pull a gun and put it on my gorgeous queen
As I peered out the window
I could see my other kinfolk and hear my little boy as he screamed
As he ran toward the copper begged him not to hurt his momma
'Cause he had her face down on the ground
And I'd be much too weak to ever speak what I seen
But my life changed with that sound

Get out, get out, get out, get out
Feeling this, feeling this too early
Get out, get out, get out, get out
Feeling this way, feeling this way
Feeling this, feeling this too early
Feeling this, feeling this early
Early, early, early, early

It be feelin' like the life that I'm living, man, I don't control
'Cause every day I'm in a fight for my soul
All hands below, high seas in a rickety boat
Smoke O's, so the kid might cope
You want cash or hope, no clash, matter fact get both
Go without get turnt to ghosts
You know that's the law, deal done by the shake of claws
It ain't a game if the shit don't pause
And I find you odd, so convinced in the truth of y'all
That the true truth's truly gone
And yes there's a they, any time a man say there's not
Then you know that he lost the plot, what can I say?
Truth's truth when denied or not, like its true crews ride the cock
Fair enough, the way that the beat bump do sound tough
I made it in the dark like Civil War surgery
Woke up in the same air you huff, early
By twelve o'clock the whole Earth felt dirty
Street lamps stare when you walk watch the birdie
They'll watch you walk to the store they're recording
But didn't record cop when he shot, no warning
Heard it go pop, might have been two blocks
Heard a kid plus pops watched, cop make girl bleed
Go to home, go to sleep, up again, early

Get out, get out, get out, get out
Feeling this, feeling this too early
Get out, get out, get out, get out
Feeling this way, feeling this way

Feeling this way, feeling this
Feeling this way, feeling this

Overall Meaning

In "Early," Run the Jewels explores themes of systemic oppression, police brutality, and the struggle for control over one's own life. The singer of the song is constantly fighting for his soul, feeling as though he has no control over the life he is living. He questions whether his medication is being used as an excuse for police to harass him, and he pleads for his freedom when he is wrongly arrested in front of his family. The song illustrates the injustices faced by Black Americans, with the singer's wife and child being threatened by police violence.

The chorus of the song, with the repeated phrase "get out," serves as a call to action. It urges listeners to leave behind the corrupt and oppressive systems that seek to control us, and instead fight for freedom and justice.

One interesting aspect of the song is the inclusion of Boots, a musician and activist who has worked with Run the Jewels on multiple projects. His vocals on this song add an emotional depth to the lyrics, and his unique style of singing and rapping adds a new dimension to the overall sound of Run the Jewels.

Another interesting fact is that the music video for "Early" was directed by filmmaker Spike Jonze, who is known for his work on movies like Her and music videos for artists like Beastie Boys and Madonna. The video features a harrowing police chase and shootout, further emphasizing the themes of police violence and oppression present in the song.

@ryleighs9575

As a musician, non-practicing for years due to depression but that's a side note, I know where the "1" beat is, but in the whole intro section, the way Mike phrases his verses around the beat, it's really confusing to count as a string player with good rhythm trying to learn rhythm and drums more for a couple of years now.

It's the way El did the beat. I know that it's 4/4 and the 4 beat is when the keyboard/synth/midi whatever does the double note (count a beat on every keyboard note with the double note hitting 4 on the second quick note).

If you count so that that's 4, it works through the whole song, but the way Mike raps the first verse plus the slight backbeat on the off beats... until it switches into the main synthy verse section, it's hard to hear the 4 beat right as a non-drummer.

I feel like it's all making me count a half-beat off, then I have to readjust when the pulse changes to make the 4/4 obvious. This comment will only mean much to musicians.

Edit: yeah, something about the opening section makes my brain hear the main beats as the off beats. Think "one and two and three and four and...", my brain can't stop hearing them the opposite way. Every beat feels like an off beat till it switches pulse.

It's only when I listen from the beginning, too. If I unpause in the middle, my brain gets it. Weird.
