The Trial
Rundfunk Orchestra & Choir Lyrics
Jump to: Overall Meaning ↴ Line by Line Meaning ↴
From the pale and downtrodden
And the words they say
Which we won't understand
"Don't accept that what's happening
Is just a case of others' suffering
Or you'll find that you're joining in
The turning away"
It's a sin that somehow
Light is changing to shadow
And casting its shroud
Over all we have known
Unaware how the ranks have grown
Driven on by a heart of stone
We could find that we're all alone
In the dream of the proud
On the wings of the night
As the daytime is slurring
Where the speechless unite
In a silent accord
Using words you will find are strange
And mesmerized as they light the flame
Feel the new wind of change
On the wings of the night
No more turning away
From the weak and the weary
No more turning away
From the coldness inside
Just a world that we all must share
It's not enough just to stand and stare
Is it only a dream that there'll be
No more turning away?
The song "On the Turning Away" by Rundfunk Orchestra & Choir touches on the theme of social justice and humanity. The lyrics conveys a message of discontentment towards turning away from those who suffer and not seeing the urgency in helping to alleviate their plight. The first verse talks about turning away from the pale and downtrodden, and ignoring what they have to say. The singer urges the listener not to accept that other people's suffering doesn't matter or else they might end up joining in the turning away. The second verse speaks about the contrast between light and shadow, how the darkness is cast over what we know, and how we are not aware of how society has grown to be driven by a heart of stone. The chorus calls for a change in humanity's actions, requesting that we stop turning away from those who are weak and weary and from the coldness that exists within us. The song ends with the plea for a better world where people share the planet and act to help those suffering around them.

And the things they express
Which we won't understand
Which we refuse to comprehend
"Don't accept that what's happening
Do not resign yourself to the reality of others' suffering
Is just a case of others' suffering
As if it is solely their issue to bear
Or you'll find that you're joining in
Otherwise, you'll become an accomplice to such behavior
The turning away"
The act of looking away from those in need
It's a sin that somehow
It is shameful that in some way
Light is changing to shadow
Hope is being overshadowed by darkness
And casting its shroud
Overwhealmed and heavy feeling
Over all we have known
Over everything we used to believe in
Unaware how the ranks have grown
Unbeknownst to us, its grown and increased
Driven on by a heart of stone
Motivated by a cold and indifferent heart
We could find that we're all alone
We may realize that we have alienated ourselves
In the dream of the proud
In the illusion of superiority
On the wings of the night
Through the isolation of darkness
As the daytime is slurring
As the clarity of the day fades
Where the speechless unite
Where the voiceless band together
In a silent accord
Agreeing without speaking
Using words you will find are strange
Using language that is unfamiliar
And mesmerized as they light the flame
And being captivated as they ignite a fire
Feel the new wind of change
Experience the push and pull of change
On the wings of the night
Through the isolation of darkness
No more turning away
No more looking away
From the weak and the weary
From the vulnerable and the exhausted
No more turning away
No more ignoring those in need
From the coldness inside
From the cruelty and indifference within ourselves
Just a world that we all must share
A world that we must all learn to live together in
It's not enough just to stand and stare
Watching and doing nothing is insufficient
Is it only a dream that there'll be
Is it just wishful thinking that someday
No more turning away?
People will stop ignoring those who are struggling?

That imaginative wall coming down pales in comparison to the real wall coming down.

People complain about this Judge, but I actually find his voice legitimately intimidating because of how calm he is. He fits into the "Tranquil Fury" trope while simultaneously sounding like an actual figure of authority.
