Although their earlier releases contained Satanic themes and imagery, from the third album on, the band's primary subject matter centered around pirates, sailing and other historical events. In 1987, the band released the album Under Jolly Roger, which was a switch to pirate-based and historical themes, creating and influencing the later named pirate metal subgenre of heavy metal in the 2000s in the process. While the historical lyrics were very superficial at first, the lyrics for later albums were intensively researched, by frontman Rolf Kasparek in particular.
After this album, from 1988 to 1992 (for the albums Port Royal, Death or Glory, Blazon Stone and Pile of Skulls), Running Wild mainly wrote historically based lyrics. In addition to lyrics about pirates, the band also addressed subjects like the Wars of the Roses, the Battle of Waterloo, or the colonization of the New World by the Conquistadors.
In April 2009, Kasparek announced that Running Wild had split up. Their intended last show was at Wacken Open Air in July that year. It was recorded for CD and DVD release and appeared as The Final Jolly Roger in 2011. The split would prove temporary as they reunited in 2012. Running Wild played live for the Wacken Open Air festival in 2015. As of 2021, the band have released 17 studio albums, with their most recent being Blood on Blood.

Running Wild Lyrics

The counts awakening, the creature of the night
Oh the night, beware of the night
When there's danger in sight, beware of the night
He is out there!
The throat became so parched, longing for relief
Oh the night, beware of the night
When there's danger in sight, beware of the night
He is out there!
He spreads his wings to fly on a high and silver stream
He is the final of your dream, Dracula!
He just arises from his dark and lonely grave
He lets his longing grow to turn into its slave
Oh the night, beware of the night
When there's danger in sight, beware of the night
He is out there!
He spreads his wings to fly on a high and silver stream
He is the final of your dream, Dracula!
The open window, he's gonna slide in
Innocent sleep and he's ready to bite
Sucking the blood, injecting the poison
Vitality fades to become undead
The morning breaks, sunlight is rising
The count returns to his lonely grave
The count he lays to rest now
His hunter knows what to do
To put a stake in position
He drives it through his heart now!
The counts unholyness just starts to fall apart
A tragic character with a damned but lonely heart
Oh the night, beware of the night
When there's danger in sight, beware of the night
He is out there!
He spreads his wings to fly on a high and silver stream
He is the final of your dream, Dracula!
He's going to hell
Caught in his spell
He's torn apart
His broken heart
The song "Dracula" by Running Wild captures the horror and legend of the infamous vampire. The song begins at midnight with the tolling of the bell and the full moon shining bright in the sky, as Count Dracula awakens from his grave. The lyrics depict him as the creature of the night, spreading his wings and flying high on a silver stream. He is the embodiment of danger, and the lyrics warn all to beware of the night.
The lyrics also describe the thirst that Dracula has for blood, and his longing to turn those he feeds on into his slaves. He waits for the unsuspecting victims to fall into a deep sleep before he pounces, sucking their blood and injecting them with his poison. As the count lays his victims to rest, he returns to his grave in the morning, until he awakens once again under the shroud of night.
The final verses of the song reveal that the count's curse is put to rest with the driving of a stake through his heart. The lyrics paint a tragic picture of Dracula as a character with a damned and lonely heart, caught in his own spell and ultimately torn apart.
