Although their earlier releases contained Satanic themes and imagery, from the third album on, the band's primary subject matter centered around pirates, sailing and other historical events. In 1987, the band released the album Under Jolly Roger, which was a switch to pirate-based and historical themes, creating and influencing the later named pirate metal subgenre of heavy metal in the 2000s in the process. While the historical lyrics were very superficial at first, the lyrics for later albums were intensively researched, by frontman Rolf Kasparek in particular.
After this album, from 1988 to 1992 (for the albums Port Royal, Death or Glory, Blazon Stone and Pile of Skulls), Running Wild mainly wrote historically based lyrics. In addition to lyrics about pirates, the band also addressed subjects like the Wars of the Roses, the Battle of Waterloo, or the colonization of the New World by the Conquistadors.
In April 2009, Kasparek announced that Running Wild had split up. Their intended last show was at Wacken Open Air in July that year. It was recorded for CD and DVD release and appeared as The Final Jolly Roger in 2011. The split would prove temporary as they reunited in 2012. Running Wild played live for the Wacken Open Air festival in 2015. As of 2021, the band have released 17 studio albums, with their most recent being Blood on Blood.

Running Wild Lyrics

"Where do we come from, where do we go?"
Well, let me tell you a story which took place a long, long time ago.
450.000 years before our time, when the atmosphere on "Nibiru"
the 12th planet was getting worse and worse and when "Alalu" the
sovereign of the "Annunaki-race" was dethroned and dislodged by
his opponent "Anu".
"Alalu" had to flee in his "Vimana" to save his life and he came down
solar radiation to save their atmosphere from destruction: "GOLD"!!
And "Alalu" revealed his discovery to "Anu" and as a reward for it
he could return to his own planet.
AND THEN IT ALL BEGAN!!
A reef of gold was the right offering
For soothing with a gift of right size
He handed it over to Anu the King
Alalu's return had its price
Enki the scientist the son of Anu
Came down and dug for gold
Building a haven called Eridu
He mastered his task truly bold
No more gold, the volume decreased
The heir to the throne came down
Enlil brought Edin to seize
Ripping the gold of the ground
Annunaki men dug really hard
They worked their hands to the bone
A serious revolt for setting a mark
Cause the rage and discontent had grown
Hellbound, poisoned souls, in pain they'll burn, no return
Mankind will never learn, their blinded pride, the evil side
The firestorm will rage on the day of the falling
Armageddon's near it's the end of the genesis
Dying by the flood, no way back, no recalling
The malice and the pride is the death and fall of man
A daring test in the hour of need
An artificial bio-robot
Annunaki-essence for an exogamy
A fertilized ovum they had
An Annunaki woman was the one who gave birth
Adapa received his science
But Adapa was banned, he wasn't its worth
Cause of malice and evil defiance
Hellbound, poisoned souls, in pain they'll burn, no return
Mankind will never learn, their blinded pride, the evil side
The firestorm will rage on the day of the falling
Armageddon's near it's the end of the genesis
Dying by the flood, no way back, no recalling
The malice and the pride is the death and fall of man
The gods created animals and plants
Adapa's daughters they took their chance
They got married to Annunaki men
Enlil got furious from this wicked sin
He knew a huge tidal wave would come
His command, no warning to none
He wanted to wipe out man from this place
He wanted to stop this conceited and evil race
As the conspirator Enki took part
Noah was charged to build up the arche
The water came deluging the spot
So, death flowed with the swallowing waves of the flood !!
Sodom and Gomorrah they fell from grace
But the gods, they had to see for themselves
Mankind was spreading demanding more space
Claiming the throne and its wealth
The gods had to prove, who was right, who was not
Who followed the laws that they gave
Only one called "Lot" at the unholy spot
They saved him and his children from grave
Firewind blew that unleashed the storm
Atomic explosions that raged
No more warning, no arousing alarm
Their power set an end to this age
A few good souls were sent by the gods
They tried to save mankind from fall
But the "Men In Black" were hatching a plot
Defiance and malice's their call
Grinding the earth, turning good into bad
They raged like a maniac beast
Exploiting the being, the evil did spread
Souls made for hellfire's feast
Hellbound, poisoned souls, in pain they'll burn, no return
Mankind will never learn, their blinded pride, the evil side
The firestorm will rage on the day of the falling
Armageddon's near it's the end of the genesis
Dying by the flood, no way back, no recalling
The malice and the pride is the death and fall of man
The firestorm will rage on the day of the falling
Armageddon's near it's the end of the genesis
Dying by the flood, no way back, no recalling
The malice and the pride is the death and fall of man
In the 7th month of the year 1999 an ancient god of wrath will return
bringing fire, water, death and destruction.
That is the day when man will be judged for all evil he has done
and he will be commanded into the eternal fire.
Only the good and righteous souls will be saved to live in eternal peace.
THIS IS THE WAR OF ARMAGEDDON!
So it has been written, so it shall be done?????
The lyrics of Running Wild's song Genesis take the listener on a journey back in time, to a period 450,000 years before our time, where we witness an incredible story of the origin of mankind. The singer of the story, Alalu, flees from the planet Nibiru to save his life, and comes to Earth in search of a way to filter the solar radiation and protect his atmosphere. On Earth, he finds gold, which he reveals to Anu, the sovereign of the Annunaki race, who rewards him by allowing him to return to his own planet. Enki, the scientist and son of Anu, comes to Earth and digs for gold, building a haven called Eridu. However, the gold eventually runs out, and the Annunaki men begin to revolt due to their anger and discontent.
The song then explores the idea that the malice and pride of mankind have led to their downfall, with the firestorm raging on the day of the falling and Armageddon approaching. The lyrics talk about the gods creating animals and plants and Adapa's daughters getting married to Annunaki men, which enrages Enlil, who commands a huge tidal wave to come and wipe out man. As the global flood approaches, Noah is charged with building the ark, and the water deluges the spot, causing death to flow with the swallowing waves of the flood.
The story then takes an even darker turn with the evil Men in Black plotting to exploit and grind the earth, and souls made for hellfire's feast. All of this eventually leads to the war of Armageddon, where the good and righteous souls will be saved to live in eternal peace, but the evil will be commanded into the eternal fire.
Overall, Running Wild's song Genesis is a powerful and intense exploration of the origins of mankind and the consequences of our actions. It explores themes of malice, pride, evil, and downfall, warning us of the consequences of these traits within us.

Isn't it ironic that back then, in the early 90s, in a time when everybody said metal is dying and grunge is taking over, when every true 80s metal band was sailing into the west, a handful of german metal bands released their most awesome stuff in their career, albums from 1992-96, holding up the last flag of true 80s metal?
Since you are already here, it seems you already discovered Running Wild, but If you haven't heard it yet, just check out Gamma Ray (anything from "Land of the Free" album (1995), but especially "Rebellion In Dreamland"), Blind Guardian (anything from" Imaginations From The Other Side" album, but especially the title track "Imaginations From The Other Side" or "A Past and Future Secret" (1994)), Helloween (anything from "Master of the Rings" or "Time of the Oath" album (1994 & 1996)), Rage ("In a Nameless Time" from the "Black In Mind" album or "Enough Is Enough" from the "Trapped!" album (1995 & 1992)) or Iced Earth (especially the title track from the "Burnt Offerings" album (1995)).... What a crazy time that was to be a teenager, when all of your friends were just talking about that new shit from Pearl Jam, Nirvana or Alice In Chains, and when you told 'em 'bout the new Iced Earth album, no one at school knew what you were talking about...

Yeah, man I can relate to this in some ways. The metal everyone was listening to in the mid to late 90's was like Smashing Pumpkins, Foo Fighters, Korn and I could never really get into it and knew no one that was into old school 80's metal or the good metal like Iced Earth in the 90's. It wasn't until 2016 I met a hot chick at work who loved heavy metal and let me listen to King Diamond where I discovered how amazing metal was. I sadly believed in all the stereotypes of heavy metal of it being too satanic and crazy for me to give it a chance. I also use to be really into hip hop and now I hardly listen to it at all. So, I'm in my mid 30s and very late to the game which is kind of lame but the good thing is I'm enjoying the fuck out of being a metal head and have built a huge cd collection over the past 3 years. Also, have been to well over 25 metal shows and in the process of completing my first battle jacket. Yeah, 90's was shitty for that reason. I found bands on Pandora when I first started and would just buy individual songs before I went onto buying full albums. The very first bands I got into were king Diamond, Helloween, and DIO. Got to see Helloween perform in Hollywood in September of 2018. Was amazing! Thanks for sharing your story. \m/
