Although their earlier releases contained Satanic themes and imagery, from the third album on, the band's primary subject matter centered around pirates, sailing and other historical events. In 1987, the band released the album Under Jolly Roger, which was a switch to pirate-based and historical themes, creating and influencing the later named pirate metal subgenre of heavy metal in the 2000s in the process. While the historical lyrics were very superficial at first, the lyrics for later albums were intensively researched, by frontman Rolf Kasparek in particular.
After this album, from 1988 to 1992 (for the albums Port Royal, Death or Glory, Blazon Stone and Pile of Skulls), Running Wild mainly wrote historically based lyrics. In addition to lyrics about pirates, the band also addressed subjects like the Wars of the Roses, the Battle of Waterloo, or the colonization of the New World by the Conquistadors.
In April 2009, Kasparek announced that Running Wild had split up. Their intended last show was at Wacken Open Air in July that year. It was recorded for CD and DVD release and appeared as The Final Jolly Roger in 2011. The split would prove temporary as they reunited in 2012. Running Wild played live for the Wacken Open Air festival in 2015. As of 2021, the band have released 17 studio albums, with their most recent being Blood on Blood.

Riding the Storm
Running Wild Lyrics

Playing with fortune, oh, what a lust to be free
Flashlights and thunder, the pattering rain on the hull
From a stormy horizon we get our course
The cry of freedom
Face in the wind, we're riding the storm
We'll stay our course whatever will come
Death or glory, oh, oh we're riding the storm
Cracks in the planks, the rigging upwards and down
Staggering masts, the pounding splash of the prow
The wind in our sails, our flag flies high on the top
From a stormy horizon we get our course
The cry of freedom
Face in the wind, we're riding the storm
We'll stay our course whatever will come
Wandering souls in the sea of the damned
Death or glory, oh, oh we're riding the storm
"Riding the Storm" by Running Wild is a song about the determination and willpower of seafarers to brave the raging sea in search of freedom and glory. The lyrics describe a scene of thunderous waves, rain, and winds that threaten to break the ship and take the sailors down. Still, the song emphasizes that the sailors are not afraid of the storm, but rather see it as an opportunity to show their strength and defiance against the elements.
The phrase "breaking the waves" symbolizes the ship's ability to overcome the obstacles and challenges of the unpredictable sea. The chorus repeats the line "riding the storm" to indicate the determination of the sailors to face the storm unitedly and stick to their course. The song also speaks of wandering souls in the sea of the damned, which could refer to sailors who have lost their way or are caught in the middle of the tempest. The line "death or glory" echoes the feeling of exaltation and the belief that it's better to die as a free person than to live as a slave.
The overall theme of the song is one of courage, rebellion, and independence. It's a celebration of the human spirit and its ability to defy calamities and emerge victorious. The song's lyrics carry an underlying message of hope and valor, reminding us that even in our darkest hour, we have the power to fight back and conquer our fears.
