Answering Machine
Rupert Holmes Lyrics

Jump to: Overall Meaning ↴  Line by Line Meaning ↴

A little while ago I went and placed a call
To tell this girl I know that she could have it all
The wedding, the ring, the whole darn thing, I was willing to tie the knot
So I called her up, and this is the answer I got:

[Chorus]
"I'm so sorry you have just reached my answering machine,
I'm not in at present, I'm sure you know the whole routine.
Leave your name and number, and I'll try to get back to you;
You have 30 seconds to talk to me before you're through."

And I said,
"Baby let's go get married, I need to hear you're mine.
I am hanging on, I am hanging on, I am hanging on this line.
And if I can leave one message before you go to bed,
I would say to you...:"

And the phone went dead.

So I stepped out to buy some dog food for the cat.
Of course she called about three minutes after that.
Would she be my wife and share my life? Well of course you can write the
Plot,
Cause she called me up, and this is the answer she got:

[Chorus]

And she said,
"Baby I got your message, I am answering your call.
I have thought it out, I have thought it out, and I think that, all-in-all
If you ask if we can marry, and make it for all time,
Then my answer is, "

And the phone went,

"I'm so sorry, you have just reached my answering machine..."

Overall Meaning

In Rupert Holmes's song Answering Machine, the singer has called a girl he knows to propose marriage to her - to give her the wedding, the ring, the whole darn thing. However, when she does not answer, he is forced to leave a message, but before he could finish, the phone abruptly goes dead, leaving him clinging to the phone line. He then goes to run an errand, only to have her call back three minutes after. When she picks up, she tells him that she heard his message, has thought it through, and is ready to answer his call. However, like before, as she is about to give him her answer, their conversation is interrupted by her answering machine.

The song highlights the culture of being constantly connected and yet ultimately disconnected with others. Despite the ease with which technological advancements allow us to connect with others, from the answering machine in the 1980s to today's smartphones, there's a sense of distance and uncertainty that comes with it. The song reflects the foolishness we feel when we cling to technology as a means of communicating our most important and personal messages, knowing they could be lost amidst the humdrum of daily life. Ultimately, the song is a commentary on the tendency of telephony to create both hopes and disappointments.

The fact that all of his songs told a story makes it no surprise that Rupert Holmes is now enjoying a wonderful career as both an author and playwright.

The chord progressions especially on the verses are unpredictible.  As a matter of fact, I'd say that's a calling card for RH.  He's a very refreshing artist.

The recording engineering was delightful, the DTMF dial tone, and answering machine beep. LOL  I love this song...I would have loved to have been in the recording studio when this was made!

@kingofallwhites DualToneMultiFrequency means touchtones which always a combination of two tones in one so that it is difficult to misinterpret......

kingofallwhites

What is DTMF?
