Russ & Mozzy Lyrics

Yeah, CHOMP 2, Boi-1da
I had to give y'all at least one
At least one of these one while I'm still lettin' y'all know
Lotta jewelry on the wall, haha
1da, let me talk to 'em real quick, yeah

When you new and make bread, everybody is toastin' (come on)
They proud that they know you, they be braggin' and boastin'
Then they all flip, everybody just dips
'Cause they only love you when everything is golden
When you new and make bread everybody is toastin'
They proud that they know you, they be braggin' and boastin'
Then they all flip, everybody just dips
'Cause they only love you when everything is golden

1da send the film, I just made eight Ms
This industry is riddled with fickle bitches and fake friends
They showed it from the start, they shadowin' the charts
They follow when you lit but disappear when it gets dark
That's why I just play my part when I leave the booth
Turn to Tony Stark, genius in a suit
People who lost faith in God look at me and say, "Jesus who?"
I restored hurdling the reward worship
The points are fabricated, they be scoreboard purchasin'
Integrity is intact
I told you to be yourself, got your identity back
This is legacy rap
This is still makin' money at seventy rap, this is equity rap
And regardless how they dissin' me, when it's all said and done
I'm on the right side of the history, victory's never won
By somebody who cannot endure pain
Real situations always expose the fakes, come on

When you new and make bread, everybody is toastin'
They proud that they know you, they be braggin' and boastin'
Then they all flip, everybody just dips
'Cause they only love you when everything is golden
When you new and make bread everybody is toastin'
They proud that they know you, they be braggin' and boastin'
Then they all flip, everybody just dips
'Cause they only love you when everything is golden

Flick it up, I'm snappin', when I'm winnin', they be askin'
'Bout the bitches that I'm smashin', if I wish it, make it happenin'
Now I'm out here goin' platinum, mama Bentley gettin' wrapped in
Something matte and I'm the captain of the rappin', labels baskin'
In the light, you find your passion where you find enthusiasm
Blew a million on my faction, blew a million on my fashion
Snuck inside the game and snatched it, climbin' mountains, Appalachian
Punked a couple rapper asses tryna judge me for reactions
That's the ones who made the captions, I'm just Staples Center rappin'
Go ask, float your boys for cash, when people mad, they call it braggin'
They just mad that life is passin' them all up while I keep tappin'
Models that they keep on taggin' on a screen I'm really crackin'
'Cause my life's what I imagined, I'm the label, I'm the back end
People tryna circle back in, act like that I shouldn't slap 'em
I been workin' on compassion, I been less and less reactive
Melody seem like distractions when they really aren't rappin', yeah, yeah

When you new and make bread, everybody is toastin'
They proud that they know you, they be braggin' and boastin'
Then they all flip, everybody just dips
'Cause they only love you when everything is golden
When you new and make bread everybody is toastin'
They proud that they know you, they be braggin' and boastin'

Then they all flip, everybody just dips
'Cause they only love you when everything is golden

Overall Meaning

The song "Golden" by Russ and Mozzy speaks about the fickleness of people's love and support for someone who has achieved fame and success. The lyrics question the genuineness of people's intentions when they toast to someone's success, but then turn their back when things get tough. The idea is that when an individual is new and on the rise, everyone around them is happy to be associated with them; however, as soon as things start to change, people quickly lose interest and move on to the next trend. The song touches on the harsh reality of life and how some people's nature is to be opportunistic, only loving you when you are at your best.

The first few lines set the song's tone, as Russ and Mozzy ask Boi-1da, who produced the beat to let them talk about something that transcends time. Russ takes the lead describing how the music industry is full of fake friends who'll brag about knowing you when things are good, but the minute things change, they disappear. Russ compares himself to Tony Stark and talks about being his own hero, something he sees as Jesus-like. He speaks about how people lost faith in God and turned to him instead. The tone is confrontational and reflective, with Russ reflecting on his journey to success, the people he trusted, and the disappointment that comes with realizing some people were not genuine.

Mozzy's verse is a reflection of the same sentiments, adding that he is now going platinum with his music and that people are asking him about the women he's with, as everyone else tries to keep up. Mozzy speaks of his love for fashion and how he has spent millions on himself, his image, and his craft. He also calls out people in the industry who are acting fake and reminds people that he has compassion, even if he hasn't always been as such. Overall, the song delivers a message about the fickleness of people's love and support, and how, in the end, what remains are those who can overcome the pain and be authentic.
