Ex members are Titus Vadon (drums, vocals / ex-member from drahdiwaberl & das balaton combo), Zebo Adam (guitar, vocals / ex-member from hallucination company), Antonia-Alexa Georgiew (violin, vocals), Werner Köck (guitar), Manfred Franzmeier (saxophone / member from hot pants road club, ex-member from madrid de los austrias) and Christoph Schödl (drums).
Their music is a rousing mixture of russian folkmusic and ska / ska-punk.
"Russkaja is the exact opposite of Easy Listening music, Russkaja - terror of terrors of all Russian folk music societies - stands for fat Austrian Polka beats. The group members are the most illustrious musicians of the Alpine region, who possess a colourful mix of cultural backgrounds. They pour these various cultural influences into a postmodern version of Russian folk and spread their distinctive music all over Europe. It is sweaty and shouts out loud: Dance Dance Dance! It is a clash of trash metal, world jazz, funky stuff and Frank Zappa-esque Rock. All these things signify: Get down to business!"
There is a word play in the name of the band: RUSSKAJA means 'russian' on russian language, but it also stands for: 'Rus' = Russia - 'Ska' = style of music - 'Ja' = German for: Yes.

The Best Things in Life Are Free
Russkaja Lyrics
Jump to: Overall Meaning ↴ Line by Line Meaning ↴
No cash to spend today
Your landlord sends you warnings
Just throw them all away
Your hands are tired of working
But wouldn't you agree
The best things in life are free
To flash someone a smile
A little conversation,
A laugh once in a while
A nap within a hammock,
A hug beneath a tree
The best things in life are free
The best things in life are free - believe me
The best things in life are free - it´s easy
Just open your eyes and you will see - so clearly
The best things in life are free
The best things in life are free
Just look at all these people,
Big business on their mind
Keep chasing after riches
They´re never gonna find
Today the sun is shining
But they´re to blind to see
The best things in life are free
Even if life seems to be difficult sometimes
It´s still a miracle to me
A nightswim in the ocean,
To see the full moon rise
To fall in love with someone
And look into her Eyes
To hold a newborn Baby
and name it after me
The best things in life are free
The lyrics of Russkaja's song "The Best Things in Life Are Free" convey a powerful message about the value of simple joys and experiences that do not require wealth or material possessions. The opening lines describe a situation where the singer is financially struggling with empty pockets and warnings from the landlord. However, the song suggests that despite the lack of money, true happiness lies in things that are intangible and cannot be bought.
The song highlights various examples of these "best things in life" that are free. It emphasizes the importance of small gestures and connections, such as a walk around the city where one can share a smile or engage in a conversation. These moments of human connection and laughter are portrayed as priceless. Additionally, the lyrics mention the joy of taking a nap in a hammock or receiving a comforting hug beneath a tree, demonstrating the significance of nature and relaxation in finding happiness.
The song also critiques the obsession with wealth and materialism. It points out that many people are consumed by the pursuit of money and possessions, yet they remain blind to the beauty and value of the free experiences life has to offer. The lyrics express the idea that even though life can be challenging, it is still a miracle. The final verse emphasizes the wonder of witnessing the full moon rise during a night swim in the ocean, falling in love, and holding a newborn baby. These moments, which evoke genuine emotions and connections, are presented as the ultimate examples of the best things in life.
