Kelly writes and performs the kinds of songs that inspire novels and movies. You could call him a bastard disciple of Kurt Cobain and Townes Van Zandt, and he’d be totally cool with that. He’s just as comfortable wearing a cowboy hat as he is in a Slayer t-shirt. His story so far twists and turns through heartbreak and triumph, an overdose and rehab, empty dive bars and packed venues, living everywhere from South Carolina to Brussels, and as he puts it, “finally getting my shit together and proposing to the love of my life.” It’s this unbelievable experience that informs his singular style—a gravelly patchwork of folk lyricism, grunge attitude, country heart, Americana spirit, and rock energy. Not only has he penned songs for Tim McGraw (“Nashville Without You”), Josh Abbott Band (“Front Row Seat”), and more, but his independent solo debut EP Halloween earned acclaim from KCRW, Consequence of Sound, RELIX, Apple Music, and more. “Poison” racked up over 516K Spotify streams, while “Black Magic” soundtracked the Season Finale of the CBS series Scorpion. He logged countless miles on the road sharing the stage with the likes of The Lumineers and Robert Earl Keen in addition to performing at Bonnaroo and Wakarusa. Signing to Washington Square Music / Razor & Tie and he recorded his full-length debut in 2017.

Ruston Kelly Lyrics

Your the prettiest thing
Your like Parker Posey in a magazine
with faded jeans and a crop top back in ‘93
I wanna be your dressed in black
Your dark star with a backwards hat
Im gonna write you a book and put your name on every page
Hey pretty little mockingbird keep singing them sad sad songs
Theres already rain on my window
Im dying when the morning comes
Flew away in the night with a raven
And now im underneath the willows hanging
Im to strung out to be upside down
Pretty little mockingbird sing your song
I was the desert honey you were the sand
I was a bird baby you were the branch
I flew into the blue and watched those flowers dying
It wasn't much just everything
You could have sat right there and got high with me
But you fell asleep and your dreaming brought the nightmares
Brought the nightmares
Hey pretty little mockingbird keep singing them sad sad songs
Theres already rain on my window
Im dying when the morning comes
Flew away in the night with a raven
And now im underneath the willows hanging
Im to strung out to be upside down
Pretty little mockingbird sing me a song
Yeah pretty little mockingbird keep singing them sad sad songs
Theres already rain on my window
Im dying when the morning comes
Flew away in the night with a raven
And now im underneath the willows hanging
Im to strung out to be upside down
Pretty little mockingbird
Pretty little mockingbird sing me a song
"Mockingbird" by Ruston Kelly is a love song that is full of vivid and evocative imagery. The song is a beautiful poetic tribute to a loved one whom the singer holds in the highest regard. The first verse is all about the singer's admiration for the beautiful creature he sees in front of him. He describes her as having "pretty wings", and compares her to the beautiful Parker Posey in a magazine from the 90s, with her faded jeans and crop top. The singer wants to be near her and to be her dark star, dressed in black with a backward hat. He even promises to write a book with her name on every page!
In the chorus, the singer continues to sing the praises of his "pretty little mockingbird". He implores her to keep singing those sad, sad songs, as there is already rain on his window and he feels as though he is dying when morning comes. In the second verse, the singer becomes nostalgic about the time he spent with his loved one. He compares himself to the desert honey and her to the sand, and himself to a bird and her to a branch. He remembers how they used to get high together, but then her dreams brought nightmares, and everything changed.
Overall, "Mockingbird" is a heartfelt tribute to the beauty of love and an acknowledgement that even the best relationships go through rough patches. Ruston Kelly's use of vivid, poetic language and metaphors make the song not only a beautiful love song but also a poetic masterpiece.
