Though she came from a musical family, Ruth Cameron first turned to acting, which she pursued in theaters in North America and Europe. She changed her focus after marrying jazz bassist Charlie Haden, becoming his manager and helping him to put together his band, Quartet West. She also co-produced many of her husband's recordings. Haden encouraged her to pursue a singing career, as did friend Jeri Southern, and she began to study with vocal coach Sue Raney. In July 1999, she released First Songs, a seven-track EP, followed in October 2000 by her first full-length album, Roadhouse
Young And Foolish

Why is it wrong to be
Young and foolish
We haven't long to be
Soon enough the carefree days
The sunlit days go by
Soon enough the bluebird has to fly
We were foolish
One day we fell in love
Now we wonder
What were we dreaming of
Smiling in the sunlight
Laughing in the rain
I wish that we were
Young and foolish again
Smiling in the sunlight
Laughing in the rain
I wish that we were
Young and foolish again
Ruth Cameron's song "Young and Foolish" is a wistful reflection on the fleeting nature of youth and the innocence that accompanies it. The opening lines question why it's considered wrong to be young and foolish, and the rest of the song reflects on the joys of youth and the regrets that can come with growing older. The lyrics describe the sunlit days of youth, which pass by all too quickly, and the sadness that can come when the carefree days come to an end. The image of the bluebird flying away suggests that youth is as fleeting as a bird that flies away into the distance.
The verse that describes falling in love is particularly poignant, as it captures the sense of wonder that comes with new love, as well as the subsequent questioning about whether it was real or a dream. The chorus repeats the desire to go back to a time of carefree laughter and sunshine, suggesting that the singer longs for the innocence of youth, even as she acknowledges that it cannot be regained.
Overall, the song is a bittersweet celebration of the pleasures of youth and a recognition that it cannot last forever, but that its memory can be cherished and revisited.
