Lucky Now
Ryan Adams Lyrics

Jump to: Overall Meaning ↴  Line by Line Meaning ↴

I don't remember, were we wild and young
All that faded into memory
I feel like somebody I don't know
Are we really who we used to be
Am I really who I was

The lights will draw you in
And the dark will bring you down
And the night will break your heart
But only if you're lucky now

Waiting outside while you find your keys
Like bags of trash in the blackening snow
City of neon and toes that freeze
We've got nothing and nowhere to go
We've got nothing and nowhere

And the lights will draw you in
And the dark will take you down
The night will break your heart
But only if you're lucky now

And if the lights will draw you in
And the dark will take you down
But love will mend your heart
But only if you're lucky now

I don't remember were we wild and young
All that's faded into memory
I feel like somebody I don't know

Are we really who we used to be
Am I really who I was

Overall Meaning

Ryan Adams’s song “Lucky Now” is a reflective track on the nature of aging, memories, and identity. The opening lines, “I don't remember, were we wild and young / All that faded into memory,” are an acknowledgement of the way time can shift and shape our memories of who we used to be. The singer then asks, “Am I really who I was,” suggesting that the passage of time has altered their sense of self.

The second half of the song paints a vivid picture of a lonely, urban landscape. The phrase “City of neon and toes that freeze” feels both desolate and beautiful, and the repetition of “we’ve got nothing and nowhere to go” suggests a sense of aimlessness that may come with the passage of time. However, the song also offers a glimmer of hope, insisting that “love will mend your heart / But only if you're lucky now.” This refrain suggests that as we age, love may be one of the few constants that can truly ground us.

Overall, “Lucky Now” is a song that explores the human experience of aging and the way it can shape our sense of self and our relationships. It embraces both the melancholy and the hopeful aspects of growing older, acknowledging how complex and nuanced this process can be.

@starkravingnormal If I wanted to discuss Ryan Adams' personal business and drama with you, I would have done so. I thought it was made clear by my lack of engaging with your attempts to accuse and argue, but you have failed multiple times to take that cue and instead you choose to make assumptions about what I do/don't believe regarding the situation you keep trying to beat me over the head with.

Just because I choose not to discuss the matter on a public platform does not mean I'm ignorant, uneducated, or without my own opinion on the matter, and you REALLY need to stop dragging this on further.

And yeah, when you don't fucking go away after I've asked you now THREE TIMES to stop, I reserve the right to get irritated with your childish behavior. When someone tells you NO, you need to listen.

If this matter with Ryan concerns you that much, then maybe you should fight to take the matter up with the people who are directly involved in the situation, not random people on the internet who have 0 personal connection to it. It doesn't get you anywhere.

Don't sit here and wish me happy holidays after the manner in which you have childishly behaved and refused to take no for an answer on my rebuttal to your attempts to drag me into your arguments.

I hope you learn how to be an adult and respect when someone is not interested in being forced into a "discussion" on a matter they do not care to publicly engage in.

@Floydthefuckbag

Nah

@ronaldjaybelin520

DRA is no longer except as an occasional feeding of the ducks at concerts for his most faithful: otherwise the new, the most recent like mirror man are full-fledged commitment to television/ cinema production ie: mirror man..= I wrote the lyrical content for Adam’s first 16 release compilations and almost every musical creation not released. If any part of ‘mirror man’ was storyline in something I wrote it’s too distorted to discern..

@ronaldjaybelin520

As a reminder of the vagaries of the industry, I also wrote the storylines for each and every cut on the Adams choreographed album 1989 which the recent billionaire T Smith claims she authored..well, never-mind the incentive extant for her feeling the need to reclaim 1989 with a reproduction..go figure

@ronaldjaybelin520

…one becomes a $billionaire$ more expediently when one plagiarizes another artists intellectual material ( property) and doesn’t make good on, for instance, $10,000,000 royalties ( DEBTS)
