Adams dropped out of high school at age 16 to work in a shoe shop and make music. He formed a band named Whiskeytown in 1994; they disbanded in 1999 having released two full albums, Faithless Street and Strangers Almanac. Adams went on to put out his first solo record, Heartbreaker, in 2000. After a long delay, in 2001 Whiskeytown's third album Pneumonia was finally issued.
In 2002, Ryan contributed backing vocals on Butterfly in Reverse, from the Counting Crows album, Hard Candy; after Adam Duritz (Counting Crows lead singer) appeared on the album Gold.
Ryan is highly prolific, and in 2005 released one double album and two regular albums: Cold Roses, Jacksonville City Nights and 29, respectively. His album, 29, was produced by friend Ethan Johns (who also produced his first two albums, Heartbreaker and Gold). In between those two releases and his 2005 triple-header, Ryan released Demolition (a collection of out-takes), Love Is Hell and Rock N Roll. Unreleased studio albums include 48 Hours, Exile On Franklin Street and Suicide Handbook.
In addition, Adams worked with Jesse Malin to form the punk-rock group The Finger (under the pseudonyms, "Warren Peace" and "Irving Plaza" respectively), who released two E.P.s which were collected together to form We Are Fuck You, released on One Little Indian Records in 2003.
In 2006 Ryan went on a minor UK-tour and a minor US-tour along the west-coast and has streamed 11+ mini albums on his website, under numerous jokey pseudonyms (DJ Reggie, Werewolph, The Shit, Rhoda Ro, Ghetto Birds).
The following solo record, entitled Easy Tiger, was released on June 26, 2007. The newest and last record with his backing band The Cardinals, Cardinology, was released in October 2008 and followed by extensive touring through the UK, US and Australia.
In January 2009 he announced that he would be going on an indefinite hiatus from music. The Kindness Songfacts reports that the major reason for Adams’ temporary retirement was his struggles with Ménière’s disease, a disorder of the inner ear that wrecks havoc on hearing and balance. Adams resumed performing in October 2010, and released his thirteenth studio album, Ashes & Fire, on October 11, 2011. His now ex-wife, pop singer and actress Mandy Moore, contributed some backing vocals.

I get these bad ides
I try so hard to be good
It doesn't always work out
It doesn't always work out
But I try...
To feel the sunlight on my eyes
That were following me around
It's very nice you know and quite a lot to take in
To feel the sunlight and start growing again
I taught myself to push it away
I was watching, watching you do it to me
I taught myself to throw it away
And you get used to being happy
you get used to it, used to it, used to it...
I like to thing about the clouds...
How they are moving
Sometimes it's nice to stay home...
When everybody goes out
It's nice and quiet when they call it's so loud
I don't understand
I shuffle cool across the boulevard
My feet move steady, my shoes go up and down
I'm always late you know...
Late and never ready
I keep it steady though
When I get tight and all up right
I taught myself to push it away
I was watching, watching you do it to me
I taught myself to throw it away
And you get used to being happy
you get used to it, used to it, used to it...
Make no mistake to be user don't mean loser
Witty and cruel they are so easy to confuse
You'll learn eventually or...
Eventually you'll lose it...
Eventually you'll lose it...
Get used to it...
I try so hard to be good
I put a lot of effort into trying to be a good person
I get these bad ideas
But sometimes I come up with negative thoughts or actions
It doesn't always work out
Unfortunately, my attempts to be good don't always succeed
But I try...
However, I continue to make an effort
To feel the sunlight on my eyes
I yearn to experience the warmth and positivity of life
Shake off the shadows
To rid myself of the lingering darkness in my life
That were following me around
Which constantly accompany and haunt me
It's very nice you know and quite a lot to take in
It's truly enjoyable and overwhelming at times
To feel the sunlight and start growing again
To embrace positivity and personal growth
I taught myself to push it away
I trained myself to ignore or distance myself from negativity
I was watching, watching you do it to me
I observed how others would put me down or bring negativity into my life
I taught myself to throw it away
I learned to discard those negative influences
And you get used to being happy
Over time, you become accustomed to experiencing happiness
you get used to it, used to it, used to it...
It becomes a familiar and regular part of your life
I like to think about the clouds...
I enjoy contemplating the movement and beauty of the clouds
How they are moving
Their graceful and ever-changing motion
Sometimes it's nice to stay home...
Occasionally, I find solace in staying home
When everybody goes out
While others are out and about
It's nice and quiet when they call it's so loud
The contrast between the peacefulness at home and the noise of social interactions
I don't understand
I struggle to comprehend why people choose certain actions or behaviors
I shuffle cool across the boulevard
I walk confidently along the street
My feet move steady, my shoes go up and down
I have a steady and rhythmic stride
I'm always late you know...
I tend to be consistently late
Late and never ready
Even when late, I am unprepared
I keep it steady though
Despite my lateness, I maintain composure
When I get tight and all up right
When I become anxious and overly concerned
Make no mistake to be user don't mean loser
One should not confuse being a user with being a loser
Witty and cruel they are so easy to confuse
It can be easily mistaken that being clever and mean are the same
You'll learn eventually or...
In time, you will come to understand
Eventually you'll lose it...
At some point, you will lose your way
Eventually you'll lose it...
At some point, you will lose your way
Get used to it...
Prepare yourself for that eventuality
