First Intifada

The First Intifada, or First Palestinian Intifada (also known simply as the intifada or intifadah), was a sustained series of Palestinian protests and violent riots in the West Bank, Gaza Strip, and within Israel. The protests were against the Israeli occupation of the West Bank and Gaza that had begun twenty years prior, in 1967. The intifada lasted from December 1987 until the Madrid Conference in 1991, though some date its conclusion to 1993, with the signing of the Oslo Accords.

Date : 8 December 1987 - 13 September 1993

Location : West Bank, Gaza Strip, & Israel

Result :
• Palestinian popular uprising suppressed

• Madrid Conference of 1991 and eventually Oslo I Accord

• Establishment of the Palestinian Authority

• The PLO recognizes Israel

Hey Chem!
Firstly - we aren't calling all Palestinians terrorists. Israel is a sovereign nation with a single military. The Palestinian Authority also has it's security forces, but there are also multiple armed resistance groups that don't (or only loosely) answer to the Palestinian Authority's leadership. There is definitely room to disagree upon definitions, but Hamas, PIJ, and the armed wing of the Fatah don't meet the definitions of an army.

Secondly - The UN doesn't have a list of terror organizations, so it makes sense that the Hamas is not on a list. But the EU, United States, Canada, and the UK all recognize the military wing of Hamas as a terror organization (sources below).

very well written, nuanced presentation offering a lot about a complex subject in a very short span of time

Thank you!

Hi Unpacked, great video, really helped me gain a good first understanding of the issue. I was wondering if you could direct me to the source pictured at 10:01 "Israel, once David, now a Goliath", as it looks like it may serve as a good source in an assessment I'm doing on the subject. Thanks!

Finally an unbiased report on this incident. The media loves to switch the roles and change public opinion. Now, as was common practice the offenders and victims have changed by the way the media portrays them. For example western states now spend a good amount of time and effort in showing sympathy for the criminals in cases because they may have experienced a difficult upbringing. Naturally this has awful affects on the victims. This is how the media portrays Israel now despite the fact that they were on the receiving side of so many terror attacks all while the "palestinians" praised these attacks against civilians. I believe I have intimate optics as I once supported the plight of these people, but I could not ignore the vicious and evil violence that was purpotrated against Israeli civilians.

“Where was PLO” during the first intifada? You asked. The right answer is they were in Tunisia at the time. Arafat was coming back to Palestine in 1993 expelling out from Lebanon in 1982. It was the first intifada that Hamas was officially stepping up on Palestine stage, becoming the rivalry of PLO thereafter.

Anyone can analyze and give there opinions on the Intifada. But truth be told, unless you lived under occupation you cant possibly understand what its like and why Palestinians did what they have to. I am talking about the first intifada and I lived through it. I am not trying to undermine your assessment here.

I bet you would have left Palestine already if you we're in this situation. Many chose to stay and get caught in the conflict or join in.

@Anon TillWhy would I leave my country Palestine?

Anon Till

@NeilKudro You do what you want. The world is a big place. My family loved our country until the situation became untenable and made the decision to move. We never regretted it.

NeilKudro

@Anon Till Noticed you said, "my family loved our country". Moving is not a bad thing depending why? But without a country, a person is lost. You can move to any place on earth, nothing replaces where you and your ancestors came from. Palestine is the blood that runs in our veins.
