RATS
S.A. Adams Lyrics

Jump to: Overall Meaning ↴  Line by Line Meaning ↴

When I see the light why is it terrifying,
It's terrifying, it's coming up, I'm going down
Down into the streets that got me here
It's blinding, blinding light, it's not supposed to rain today

I see it now, it was just moving too fast
I see it now like a reflection in my past
Rivers of poison that surround us
On an island full of death and rats, subways and taxicabs

And you, and those blinding lights
Yeah you and those blinding lights

I just want to sleep why is it never over
The day before keeps running through my head I need the
Downs in the street, it's awe inspiring,
The strangers passing, nobody stops to say goodbye

I see it now, it was just moving too fast
I see it now like a reflection in my past
Rivers of poison that surround us
On an island full of death and rats, subways and taxicabs,
All night bars, and mistakes you know I made before
Days and nights, endless, overripe, buses and traffic lights
And tourists with subway maps and

You and those blinding lights
Yeah you and those blinding lights
Yeah you and those blinding lights

Yeah you and those blinding lights
Shining on the death and rats

Overall Meaning

The lyrics of "Rats" by S.A. Adams reflect feelings of anxiety and uncertainty about the future. The opening lines suggest that the singer is overwhelmed by the brightness of the lights that they see, describing it as terrifying. They feel like they are going down into the streets that got them where they are, suggesting that they are stuck in a cycle that they can't escape from. The line "It's blinding, blinding light, it's not supposed to rain today" further accentuates the intensity of the lights and the overwhelming feeling that the singer experiences.

The song then goes on to describe the city as a place of death and rats, subways and taxis, full of strangers passing by without stopping to say goodbye. Rivers of poison surround the island, suggesting a polluted and toxic environment. The singer is unable to escape their past mistakes and the endless days and nights that stretch out before them, filled with buses and traffic lights, and tourists with subway maps. It all seems to cut into the singer's feelings of hopelessness.

In the chorus, the singer returns to the blinding lights, suggesting that these are somehow connected to the surrounding death and rats. But they are not necessarily blaming the light - rather, they seem to be acknowledging that the brightness of the light highlights the stark contrasts in the environment of the city.

Brilliant! I can't eradicate rats in my back yard
Pest control people out again tomorrow
The *****s have burrowed again
My nextdoor neighbour has 3 dogs and they leave her yard
One of their dogs is so territorial it will bark at leaves blowing etc
The next set of neighbours are having problems like me
So once pet control has been ,Im hoping they may just F off
They've just tried jumping through my kitchen window as it was ajar
I can literally see their claw marks
Thank God it's too slippy
I'm in a ground floor flat
Great job :)

Thats because the authorities view this as a quality of life issue not a health issue. Good luck new york. Hope you get a rat carried virus to kill all of you.

@sergiopabon1387

You need to trap them. Its more effective then hunting them. Look for rat traps on YouTube.
